Oil Thread of a Different Kind -- Worth Reading
« on: April 05, 2015, 09:50:11 AM »
Hi, folks.

Another area of air-cooled interest for me is within the world of Corvairs, and while participating in forums within that realm, I came across a great resource that I thought might be of interest to folks here.  Yes, this is targeted at old air-cooled cars, but I think the information is relevant to old air-cooled motorcycles, as well, particularly those with dry clutches.  What's refreshing is that this is an objective viewpoint written by a petroleum engineer, and contains information on actual lab analysis, including recent tests on oils from the 1960's.  For those who really want to go deep in understanding oil, download the 33-page document and have at it!

Amen to synthetics.....I have used Mobile one after break in dino oil on all my cars and motorcycles. (of course motorcycle Mobile one for the motorcycles) Never had one oil related trouble in either my cars or motorcycles....not a bad result for > 25 years of testing mobile one.  I also use mobile one(synthetic)in my 23 year old John Deere lawnmower and my Toro snowblower.

where can I duck and hide?  ;D

I'll have to remember that the next time I buy a new Corvair.

It's a flat tappet engine, too.. I'd say it's relevant. <shrug>

What totally odd beasts we are. I saw one "oil guy" thread with a feelow who changed his lawn equipment oil every 10 hours, or once a month. Cheap insurance, he called it.

Did no one see the dangers of ZDDP? That was cool.

When that 60 Corvair was new did anyone back then check the ZDDP content of the available oil? Who says every oil then had more more ZDDP than modern SN rated oils? GM designed engine to use the oils of that period...
