Author Topic: Oil leak on brand new bike (Read 8797 times)

Took my Norge out for a ride and when I returned home I was looking the bike over and found oil coming from the left side. >:(Took off one of the side panels and it appears to be coming from a flange that has a hose connected to it that connects to the left cylinder. (back side)
I hope this isn't going to be a common occurrence, the dealer I bought it from is 80 miles away! I wouldn't mind fixing it myself but I'm not sure what part I'd be looking for. Hope these pics came through.

That's the breather hose. Are you sure it's the hose? If so you can probably cure it by simply replacing the Oeliker clamp with a hose clamp. Do make sure that it is the hose though. The breather plate is sealed with an o-ring. If that is damaged then messing with the hose won't fix it. You'll need to remove the breather plate ro replace the o-ring. Check that the two screws that hold the plate are nipped up tight too.

No, I'm pretty sure it's not the hose but the plate the hose is connected to. I'll check the screws tomorrow when I have time but my gut says it's probably an o-ring. Is this a fairly easy part to find?

Its a speciic size as it has tol slip into the head casting I'll see if I an get the size from the parts list. Alternatively just pull the plate and seal it with a thin smear of threebond or the like. Then you can leave it until the first service and let the shop deal with it. Mind you if the sealant fixes it why bother farting about with a new o-ring? ;D

first remember that N.E.W. is an abbreviation for Never Ever Worked (before). This is true of guzzi's as much as anyone else.
If it were me i would first call the dealer and ask for their recommendation. If the leak is not too bad I would stick a couple extra quarts in my pockets and ride to the dealer. As long as you don't let the oil level go down too far and it is not leaking bad enough to bleed off pressure you should be fine.
Let the dealer do his job and make the warranty repair. I am sure they would appreciate the opportunity to make it right.

Kris, the first several months of Norge ownership for me involved a number of oil leaks. Both flex lines running to the top of the head, the breather hose, the oil pressure sensor, and the rear drive. My garage floor looks like it had bad acne. I've learned to relax a lot about oil leaks. Oh, and the side stand fell off, all of the exhaust header nuts came loose or fell off, and the Lamda sensors were loose and rattled like crazy. Not to mention the dealer killing my spark plug wires and throttle cables and screwing up the fuel injection and putting my bike out of service for an entire summer. Did I mention I'm on my fourth oil pressure sensor.

It's a great bike, fantastic really, just not fully assembled as delivered.

No, I was only charged tax and license. I still feel it was a good deal for such a gorgeous bike, but I have a low tolerance for oil leaks, especially on a new bike. There's a dealer in town but they're mainly into scooters and they don't stock any Norge's so I fear they may have little if any experience working on one. Kris, it's two bolts and an o-ring, just get the local shop to order one, the part number is listed above. The breather plate is just that, a plate, undo the bolts, wriggle the plate out, discard the old o-ring, slip the new on on and lubricate it lightly with either rubber grease or, if you don't have any of that, a light smear of oil. Slip it back into place and tighten it down not too tight. Once you've got to the point you were at to take the pics it's about ten minutes work and a two dollar o-ring. If you want to be doubly sure, as I suggested, use a thin smear of Threebond on the flange of the plate.

What Pete said. The bolts were loose on mine with some miles. I am not sure of threebond but RTV Black (permatex) would be a good choice available in the US.

Threebond = Hondabond 4/Yamabond in the US.

Also available as ThreeBond 1194 in the US. Silicone RTV isn't so good at sealing oil, as it softens.

I've already ordered a couple of o-rings, checked the bolts and they are tight. Never heard of threebond but will hunt it down. I'd rather fix it myself as I'm rather meticulous and I know the dealer wouldn't be. It looks like the tank may have to be raised a bit to get at that back bolt, I had a hard time getting torx bit on it to check it. O-rings are on back-order so I'll have time to look into it further.

O-rings in stock here. If you have any problems or it looks like a long delay gimme a hoy and I'll slip a couple in the post. I use Threebond 1211, be warned, it isn't cheap.

Thanks Pete, I was just looking for the threebond, kinda pricey but probably worth it. There are several different threebonds, I was also told to use 1194, so many choices!
I'd like to order a couple of those o-rings as I don't want to be waiting too long. Let me know how I can pay you and how much. Also, do you have a website selling other Guzzi parts? I'm brand new to MG and to this forum so please excuse my ignorance.

If your importer doesn't have the o-rings in stock and they need to be back ordered from Italy it's worth me slipping a couple in an envelope for you but if they are just back ordered by the dealer to the warehouse in Georgia they should be getable in a couple of days. Also try the 'Good Guys', MPH, AF-1, MG Cycles, Harpers, Moto International. If none of them can help then yes, I'll pop a pair in the post and all I'd ask is you give a donation of ten bux to a non-religious charity of your choice. Ten bux should cover two poxy o-rings and postage. I think the rings retail for about two bux each here.
