Agostini Silencer for Norge
«
on:
April 07, 2015, 01:35:32 PM »
My new can arrived yesterday from Italy, so I popped in on last night.
Initial thoughts:
It is MUCH lighter and smaller than stock
Surprisingly, it is also quieter than stock, at least with the DB killer installed
I like the look of the stock silencer better; it seems to fit the look of the bike better
For those of you contemplating replacing your Norge silencer, I am not sure it is worth the expense. However, I will give it some time. In my experience, silencers "open up" with some miles on them. (I have no idea why.) Also, I have not yet tried it with the DB killer removed. Perhaps I will tonight just for grins.

If you want to do that just so you can blip the throttle at the stop light the sound will be kind of anemic. Try it with a HD. ::)

It won't run as well if you remove the dB killer.

:PICS!:
Look/Sound like these?

I like to listen to (yes, oxymoronically! ::)) “aggressively mellow” exhausts, whether riding or not. But, the stock Norge can does that enough for me.
As with so much about this delighful disease, YMMV.

No pics, but it looks like the one in the second video (though it doesn't sound like it, at least not with the DB killer in).
Here's the one I bought:
PS: Because I am in the U.S., I did not have to pay the 22% tax. Consequently, the price fell to 412 Euros (before shipping).

DB killer removed. Much better! Now I can hear the exhaust.
Just FYI, with the DB killer removed, the Norge is still not nearly as loud as my Ducati ST2 or Triumph Thruxton with after-market cans. The Norge has a fairly civilized sound with the DB killer removed. The Ducati and Thruxton are so loud (and awesome!), they probably frighten women and children....
Yeah, I know what has been said about ride-ability, but I'm going to give it a go anyway.
The moral of the story? If you have a newish Norge, don't bother with an after-market silencer unless you are willing to remove the DB killer. Otherwise, it will be a waste of money. The stock Norge can has a very nice rumble to it, and it is LOUDER than the Agostini can with the DB killer installed. Also, the weight savings are negligible. I can probably eat that much poundage in one meal...

Bill,
I was thinking about that before I removed the DB killer. (Actually, I was thinking about how I would explain to my wife that I just flushed $500 down the drain!). Now, I'm not so sure.
With the DB killer removed, the Norge sounds great. It is louder, but it is not obnoxiously loud. I need to ride it around tomorrow and see how it does...

By the way, the Agostini DB killer is nothing more than a six-inch long steel tube that is 1-¼ inches in diameter. It reduces the opening at the back of the silencer from about 1-¾ inches. It is amazingly effective at muffling the sound (really, throttling the voice) of the exhaust.

If you wanted to tune the sound cutting the db killer shorter will increase the noise level. Of course if you are happy with the db killer out altogether and the bike runs o.k. then that's fine.
Th look of the Agostini pipe suits the Griso, Breva and Sport models better. With the bulkier Norge I agree it is slighty out of proportion but still is a nice looking bit of kit.
$500 is £312 and that's a bargain here in the U.K.so enjoy your new exhaust.

It about 40K for the Mistral on my 1200SP to really open up and sound as throaty as I would like. So, patience, Grasshopper, patience.

RIDE UPDATE: Perfect!
The Norge runs great, with or without the DB killer. No flat spots or hesitation. Just strong power everywhere.
Without the DB killer, the Agostini can sounds very good, which is how it ought to sound. Again, if you are interested in buying an Agostini can for your Norge to run it with the DB killer in, why bother? It is quieter than the stock silencer, and you can hardly see it with the left pannier in place. No, the only reason I can see is to run it with the DB killer removed.
As for the sound volume without the DB killer, it is louder than stock, but not much. It is not at all obnoxiously loud. Again, it is nowhere near as loud as my Ducati or Triumph with after-market cans. Frankly, while riding, I can barely hear the exhaust. Tire noise from the cars around me is louder.
As for the popping on deceleration, I hear that a bit more, but it is not obnoxious. If this bike were a Triumph Modern Classic, like my Thruxton or my wife's Bonneville, I would remove the secondary air injection system in a heart beat and be done with the popping. For such a Triumph, this is all that is needed:

You might find it a bit more difficult to remove the secondary air injection system on the Norge.
