Bassa needs rear tire - Michelin Pilot Activ ?
« on: April 07, 2015, 05:27:01 PM »
I have shuffled through the existing threads and decided it was time for updated information. I promise to delete this thread soon, or re-title it as "The Ultimate Bassa Tire Thread".

The rear Pirelli Sport Demon is toast after my trip to Arizona (trip report being created now - excerpt: " 7,000 - The number of miles on the rear Pirelli Sport Demon " )

Michelin Pilot Activ, or Road 3, or something of that nature? Any new contenders in the race for my rear tire?

EDIT: Actually, I'll have to check my records and verify that I really go 7K out of that tire. If that's the case, why would I change? I could just put on another one. Right? Do people actually get much more mileage than that out of a non-touring type rear tire?

That's the combustion chamber of the turbo shaft. It is supposed to be on fire. You just don't usually see it but the case and fairing fell off.

I've been getting around 10K out of Pilot Activs.  I could likely get stretch it to 12K if everything wasn't so flat here along the coast.

:+1 on the Pilot Activ. There was 11 plus thousand miles on the rear active on my Jackal when I changed it. There was easily and safely another thousand miles of wear left but I was doing some maint, had the rear wheel off and went ahead and changed it. There is over 12k miles on the front and it is looking good. Now, I am in Florida with its long straight hot roads. Curves are few and far between. The majority of my riding is 50 to 75 mph for about two hundred miles then I park it for a few days. I take about one 1500 to 2000 mile trip a year on that bike. I am a lightweight and I travel light. That is a factor in tire wear. I don't know what kind of road surface you have in your area and I am sure that is a significant factor in tire wear also. I had the bike up in the Blue Ridge last summer and the tires handled the curves just great. Very confidence inspiring. Great feedback. Lots of good choices in tires today. Good luck.

I noticed the other night that my Marathon was starting to square off.  Checked the mileage and it has 8500, so in another 1k I'll replaced it with a Pilot Activ.  I've already got the Michelin on the front and have no issues so might as well try the set.

Can't help you on the rear YET, but thumbs up on the Pilot Activ front tire.

I cannot figure out how so many folks get so many miles out of tires, especially rears.

Not sure whether that's a result of a heavy throttle hand or just a heavy body  ::) ... or both ... but I cannot meet, much less beast, most folks' mileage numbers.

Now, that said, I've had several sets of M880's om my EV and all have done quite well in terms of longevity.

Last time the EV needed to be reshod, I tried the Activs.

Short version, from my seat-of-the-pants perspective, i.e., nothing scientific whatsoever, is that the M880's last longer, but the Activ's perform better in terms of traction, handling, and other riding functions.

Gotta go.  At nursing home.  Never bored here!

Tire wear is directly related to a few things. first and foremost is road construction. if you live in an area that has grainy roads tires will wear faster. I have a friend who rode the same scoot as me we weigh pretty close to the same, same tires and tire pressures he could only get 5k out of a rear where I could get 7-7.5k riding in TN where the roads are much smoother ins construction. same story on the fronts.

some folks get better mileage because they are less aggressive riding, and riding shorter trips. longer trips ad more heat and more heat is more wear. Also tire pressures play a factor as well an under inflated tire will wear faster than the same tire slightly over inflated . but over inflated tires ride like crap if you do any kind of twists and nice back road riding. interstate straight line you won't tell a difference in an over inflated tire much.

Now take in to account rider weight and /passengers/gear. obviously a rider weighing in at 180 lbs is going to get better mileage than one thats 250 and or with a passenger and or with extra gear in side bags top cases .

I have the Michelin Pilot Active on the Vintage and like it. I run a Shenko on the EV and like it at a much lower cost, although I don't think they make it in the 140 which I believe is on the Bassa. I use to run ME880's on the EV and Special Sport which gave the longest millage but the rear cupped so I switched to the pilot.

Yes, I have them on my Jackal. Very good tires. Smooth ride and handle very well. I would definitely get them again. They seem to be wearing very well after one season of riding.  8)

Yeah, I think size availability is going to drive me back to the Pirelli Sport Demons for another set.

hard off the throttle and hard on kill tires quick on big twins. with my insensitive right hand (just like my personality) I will never get good rear tire mileage.

Michelins for me with cars and bikes. They always seem to be top notch. You pay a little more, but as with most things, you get what you pay for.
