America's Best EyeGlasses?

Anyone had dealings with this company?  http://Http://www.americasbest.com   They claim two pair of glasses, with an eye exam for $69!   

Every time I go to get specs, I usually order a regular pair and a pair of sun glasses, eats up close ton $500! 

But if I can get a decent eye exam and  2 reasonable glasses for less than $300 I would like to know!

I get a free eye exam (through Medicare) each year so I don't know how much the exam will cost you.  But.........I just bought two pair of glasses (both with the very flexible titanium frames) via the internet using $39 dollar glasses.com.  You just write the numbers down that are on your prescription and pick your frames and additional features that you want.  You'll see the prices each time you add a frame or an additional feature and there's no surprises at the end of the transaction.  Shipping was free.  They showed up in about five or six days from the date that I placed the order and the quality was first rate.  My youngest son has been using them for several years.

Hate to be even more of a bragger.  I had very mild cataracts which were recently removed and replaced with spiffy aspheric plastic lenses, all covered by Medicare (Thanks, Lyndon).  I also had post-surgery limbic relaxing incisions (look it up), which corrected any residual astigmatism.  The result is I now have 20/15 vision in both eyes without glasses.  I do need reading glasses but I can motorcycle glasses-free.  What a difference!!

I'm a fairly new entry in the eyeglasses competition, and so far I seem to be losing.  I can't ever get out of a store with a sale for the sale price.  There's always something about my needs that put me outside the 'specials' range.

My sister had some cataract surgery done and it worked out well for her.  Me, I don't think I'd volunteer to get stabbed in the eye.  I really don't think I'd volunteer and PAY someone to do it.  My mom was blind and us kids grew up surrounded by various and multiple-handicapped people.  An eye injury/failure is one of the few things I genuinely dread to the point of bad dreams.

     My experience with the inexpensive glasses is that the field of vision is quite narrow and to focus on thing takes a lot of neck turning. Especially when at a stop sign and having to look both ways gets to be literally a pain in the neck. But your experience may very. I use them just on the computer now as that only requires looking straight ahead.

I am wearing glasses from AB. If you have single vision lenses you get off cheap. Add things like trifocal lenses and auto darkening and the cash register really starts ringing. I have had glasses for 50 yearsand find their product no different from any other.

How did you pull that off?  ;-T  Medicare will cover the cataracts but they are wanting $2000 per eye to install corrective lens.  ::(  :BEER:

It's true that Medicare covers implanting only standard artificial lenses, which are corrective in the sense that they supply the correct spheric focus component (for best distance or near vision, patient's choice).  Medicare doesn't cover cylinder (astigmatism) correction.  One way to correct astigmatism is with so-called "toric" lenses.  These will cost big bucks (about $1000/eye) and are tricky to install correctly.  However, this is not a big problem if you don't have too much astigmatism, because cylinder values of up to about 1.50 diopters can also be corrected with limbic relaxing incisions (LRIs), performed either during surgery or, better yet, after the basic lens has been implanted and the surgery has healed.  LRI is a relatively inexpensive procedure, about $200 per eye.  Better yet, in my case, my very nice surgeon classified at least some of my remaining astigmatism after the basic cataract surgery to be "surgery-induced astigmatism", and so fixing it WAS covered by Medicare.  Can't beat that.

I tried AB once......once. I bought two pair of glasses with graduated lenses and one pair were almost unusable. I had them remake them twice and they were never really correct. That was over a year ago. This past January I went to LensCrafters and got a pair of graduated lenses and a pair of sport sunglasses with graduated lenses (first time in around 20 twenty years I've bought prescription sunglasses). Did it cost more? Yes, but the glasses were noticeably much better and were right from the day I picked them up. I did get a discount for buying two pair but it was nothing like AB markets.

At first I thought they are only useful as trash/work glasses

The first two days I had them I felt like I was inside an aquarium.. But that sensation passed pretty quick

They are crappy but after some experimentation I settled on one style I like that work well for me.

Now I have one pair of 'good' 'dress' glasses... And about 5 pair of work/riding/everyday/sunglasses that I paid around $19-25 per pair for

My wife and I have several pairs from Zenni, thanks to a recommendation from this board.  The ones I have are every bit as good in every way as others I've had from many different opticians over my life, and didn't take any time to adjust to.  The price was a small fraction of what most walk-in places want.

 I have bought two pairs from Zenni a pair of single vision sport glasses which worked out okay and a pair of progressive lens which where no where close to being usable.YMMV

That's interesting, Steve.  My wife had name brand progressives from a local optician and got a new pair from Zenni.  She said they were essentially the same.  I know there are several implementations of progressive lenses.  Maybe what Zenni uses happened to be a different type than you were used to, but similar to what my wife was used to.

 A friend of mine just had two pair made from Zenni with progressives and he is happy with them. I think they got the numbers wrong because no part of the glasses where even close to my prescription . But I will try them again, I need a new pair of sport sunglasses for bicycle riding and $30 is a good price!

My 2 cents. I have been wearing glasses for almost 60 years. I had for years gone to a small local optometrist until he retired. I have since gone to a local university that has a teaching program. You receive a very through exam by the student followed up by the instructor (Doctor) on staff. They have the latest state of the art equipment and do in my eye ::) a great job. After that they explain your prescription and you can pay (About $45. or $50.) and leave to go were ever you like or purchase glasses from them. I buy them there, because if there is a problem there is only one place and party to deal with. The big discount places are like everything in life, hit and miss. You may find them very good and save a lot of money or not. I don't have a lot of confidence in the quality of those cheap eye exams, but I'm sure there are some good doctors at a few of them.  :BEER:

I have a Medicare Advantage Health Plan (mine is with Humana but it's a Medicare benefit) and Medicare gives a free eye exam each year.  They also give a price break on lenses & frames but I found that the brick & mortar store prices were more expensive so I purchased them online.  The online company that I bought them from also offered more frames choices and I specifically wanted frames that were extremely flexible.  There was no difference in the quality of the lenses than those that I have purchased in the past from other companies (Lenscrafters & other optical stores).  I would think that there are other quality, online stores to purchase from but my son has had lot's of praise for $39 eyeglasses. com so I took his recommendation.  As I said in my earlier post, the quality was first rate.  I'll buy from them again if I need more glasses (and if I'm still fogging a mirror.........LOL)

Every time I get an eye exam I beg the doctor to find a cataract so I can get insurance covered surgery with corrective lenses. My late brother did it and said it was like "getting new eyes". I'm at 20-400, still correctible, but not getting any better. Medicare kicks in 2 months from now. Options?

AB did my bifocals a few years back. They nailed it. Tried them for contacts (monovision.) They nailed it again, but I have a lot of trouble getting them in. My problem not theirs. I find they do good work.

You are not getting an eye exam for $69. You are getting a prescription for eye glasses. A good exam takes 60 minutes or more depending if you need field vision test.
Spend the money and get yourself check by a good experience optometrist.

Usually I go to Penny's eye dept American bests etc. The NON superstore chain dialated my eyes and this was the first time I ever remember getting it done. She also REPEATEDLY doule checked my " I can see with that lens you turned" to make sure I had the best script .

   I will check out the online places to have new lenses put in my old frames, but my bi focal script they will be way more then 39 bucks.

That sounds like the exam I get at my Ophthalmologist, or close to it. 

I think Zenni Optical (zennioptical.com) will do bifocals for that price, or not much more.  I got all titanium frames and paid a few bucks extra for higher index lenses for light weight, and I think the total was about $80.  Their budget frames would save at least $30.
