I can't believe it.  That Alaska Wild Salmon sandy pictured is done with Atlantic farmed fish.   :-[  :-[  :-[  There is no baby-shit-colored 'salmon' frequenting Alaska.  In fact, the color in that photo doesn't occur anywhere in nature outside of a diaper.

Good thing, because the halibut taco crowd, venison burger police ,and the smoke and lox legion would all argue against their choice.

Alaskans measure their sandwiches differently.  A good one can consist of anything (and often does) as long as it seats a family of four and the dog.  If you're single, you make a good one for lunch and eat it till Thursday.

Hey my 83 year old mother makes a great chicken fried steak that I've been known to make a sandwich out of the next day.  Of course she was born in Texas and only spent a few years in Oklahoma while her Pa was working with the road gangs back in the 30's.

So let's not be speaking poorly about chicken fried steak.

The pheasant sandwich looks interesting.  I have a dozen birds in the freezer that I have to smoke this summer.  Since I use wood / charcoal to smoke I have to wait for hot weather.

Being a looooong time tuna sandwich consumer I wonder how long it would take for me to ride my Griso from Folsom, Ca to South Carolina in a quest to the origins of the holy Tuna Melt.     :drool

Charleston claims that the tuna melt was invented at Woolworth's downtown?  Didn't know that one.  

I always ordered a "huna on squaw" from the lunch truck when I worked in El Segundo but I understand you have to call squaw bread "Indian Princess Bread" these days.  Either way the nice lady in the truck made the perfect tuna melt with jack cheese, lettuce, salted tomato slices, and jalapenos.

Used to be a place on main street in Columbia SC, may still be there, that all the legislators frequented for lunch.  They were open very late so the bar-closing crowd met there too.  Their "chicken sandwich" was a whole deep-fried chicken, sitting on a slice of Sunbeam bread and piled high with fries and another slice of bread on top.  Pickle on the side.

Just the thing after a night in 5 Points.

As a Louisiana native I have to agree that the "Po Boy" is probably the King of sandwiches, but the ones pictured would quietly be slid into the trash by any resident of Chalmette or Metarie (the bread did look about right Leidenhimer's or Rising bakeries). But what about the iconic "Mufaletta",brought over by Italian immigrants,(Google it, then drool), originated at Central Grocery in the N.O. French quarter in the 1900's and still around. Regardless of how good your meats and cheese's are, and they better be true gourmet, the bread is very difficult to reproduce, and yes they are even better after a trip thru the oven. Hope you all get to sample some of these delites. Ciao,chow.

In Australia, you've got something pretty similar to the chicken fried steak sandwich, except you call it Schnitzel (as does the rest of the world).

Yes; it is odd.  Undoubtedly, schnitzel was brought over by the numerous German speaking immigrants who settled much of the middle of this country.  Somewhere through the years the name was changed.  Perhaps "schnitzel" was a little too German sounding for the middle-American sensibilities of the time?

No matter; you can order chicken fried steak from a menu in Germany, but you'll need to order it by a different name; that's all.
