Breva trans destructed in Baxter, MN! Was the trans.....
« on: May 09, 2015, 06:31:39 PM »
I have had a lot of work in Milwaukee the last couple months but finally a job a bit farther. Got the Breva ready to roll for tomorrow morning.
Looks like rain so planning an easy trip. Tomorrow will just be St Cloud, MN but maybe a stop to see friends at Diamond's Coffee shop in Minneapolis early afternoon.
Canadian Mint needs some work on their heat treating equipment.

Well, well, well....I see the Canadian Gov't. is hiring workers from south of the border, wait... never mind.

Sounds like a neat trip, enjoy.

Specialty stuff; can't just get anyone working on these big vacuum heat treat furnaces, you find 'em wherever you find 'em.   For ours, we didn't care if they came from Ruritania, Lower Slobbovia, the kingdom of Prester John, or Elbonia as long as they could get us back on line .....

Trans messed up coming to a stop light in Baxter, MN this morning. Loud grinding noises. Guessing input shaft issue. Rented car, left bike at a hvac shop. Trying to think of ideas to get the bike back.

Unusual behavior for a Breva 750, from what I know about them .... ?

Sorry this threw a wrench in your riding and working plans ....

isn't that the Big Breva?

When does the job end?  Maybe I could meet you there with my trailer?  I don't know if I can swing the time, it's about 150 miles away from me but could maybe do it on a weekend. and then you'd only be in Mpls but you could fly home for your van? or take my Uly to get the van? warning, you'll want one if you do.

thanks fotoguzzi for the generous offer.
I just got to Winnipeg. I can rent a U-Haul in Baxter for around $350 one way which would require the least amount of my time.
The car rental place has a not perfect Dodge Caravan that the agent said the seats fold down but I am not sure if I could get the bike in there, of course, after removing the mirrors, windshield, etc. I could easily pull the front forks too, just not sure if I could slide it up a 2 by 12 by myself to get it in there.
I should be done in Winnipeg Wednesday afternoon. I can be in Baxter by noon Thursday and rent whatever works or drive home, return the car in my town and go back Friday in my van and scoop it up.
Need to search Caravan pics with the seats folded down....

I highly doubt it will fit in a Caravan.. I used to have one as a work car.. I think it's opening is not tall enough to roll a bike in and would be too much work to drop forks or take off wheel.

other ideas, used pickup truck.. $900.

Loud grinding noise? Peel back the boot and see what comes tumbling out. My guess is the uni joint has self destructed. Used to be common on the older smallblocks, newer ones are a lot better but a Baby Breva isn't in the first flush of youth now and if it has spent a lot of its life just sittin' there would be even more chance for it to dry out and go udders skywards. They don't temd to give as much warning as big block UJ's either.

If it is the UJ swapping the driveshaft, (They only use a single Hookes coupling on the Smallblocks and its part of the shaft assembly.) is not a big deal. The luggage will be the biggest pain in the arse.

PS Rick and Gordon seem to have one to hand.

I put an '83 Yamaha Vision in a Plymouth Voyager (badge-engineered Caravan) and drove it and my wife from L.A. to Glacier National Park. Must have taken off the windshield. Just measure carefully before you start loading. I actually measured a bunch of minivans on dealers' lots before picking the Voyager/Caravan as the best fit. The Vision is not too small. I suggest getting a measuring tape and finding out if the Breva will fit.

Every state has got a way for you to drive a newly-purchased car in their state back to your home.   Just have the purchase paperwork with you, and drive to a DMV office on your way toward home.   They'll issue a set of three-day tags (or something similar - every state is different) to let you drive the car home, where you can do the real paperwork, title, tags, etc.

Shoot, JB doesn't have to worry a bit.   We've got Chuck in Indiana on our team, who learned a mysterious technique known only in the Orient to allow ANY motorcycle to fit in ANY van.   He makes no secret about this zen-like power of his, matter of fact he will remind you of it early and often, as he makes a fully dressed Victory Vision absolutely disappear into an Austin Mini and drive it across the country ....  :D   :D   :D

Late night but not a u-joint. Makes noise sitting still. Splines, dogs or something not mating up. When I was pushing the bike the half mile to where I left it, it went into gear. I started it, got about 20 feet and it slipped out. Like the front hub nut slipped off. Not sure but transmission related 100%. Not u-joint.

Yup, a 10ft U-haul in Baxter seems to be the cheapest ticket home.  I'm in Kansas for a week+ so I'm of no use to trailer you to Mpls.

Having been inside the box a couple of times I got to head scratching I wonder if you have actually broken a shaft in there.

The other thing I found when I was first inside it was the stud that locates the arm on the detent arm was snapped. I put a new one in,  but when Steamdriven  (Kev) and myself had it apart some time later to replace the jammed non jamming pre-selector it broke again with no force on it at all.  Kev did a mod, drilled it out and replaced it with either an 8.8 or 10.9 cap screw, which is way stronger.  If that arm was able to move around I wonder if it allows gears to engage/disengage at will.

Just guessing, as I haven't taken apart a small block but if it is like a big block, I would say it felt like the nut that holds the clutch hub onto the transmission shaft came loose and the hub slid off past the splines but then while pushing it slowly, the hub slipped back onto the splines and as I tried again, it slipped right back off again.
But it may not be that at all!

No hub on the smallblock so the shaft can't float. Now I'm thinking return spring or detente spring failure.

We pretty much know it's not the transmission mainshaft nut that came loose.  :o  That's a bitch to get off and has a bent tab to boot.

Could be the clutch plate. The small block clutch is similar to an automotive plate where the center hub floats and pushes against springs. I've seen the springs fail as well as the rivets in cars, could happen on a bike too.

That bloke who did a big tour of Europe starting from Ireland on a baby Breva had a gearbox issue early in his trip. Turned out to be a broken 4th gear I think. Just snapped a tooth. Some blokes in Paris fixed it for him in a day. Sounds like a total gearbox job so probably best to drag it home. Bummer. Hope you sort it without too much grief ratguzzi.

J.B.  Nick Webb has written a very informative (and humorous) write up and has posted it on the This Old Tractor site on a stripdown of the Breva box.  Some little tricks that the official Guzzi stripdown manual fails to mention.

I went and pulled up the above document for entertainment purposes - it's 52 pages long.

http://www.thisoldtractor.com/guzzitech.dk/pdf/gearbox-repair-breva-750-nick-webb.pdf

I won't be reading it at work today.
That's the combustion chamber of the turbo shaft. It is supposed to be on fire. You just don't usually see it but the case and fairing fell off.
