give me a reason....
« on: May 13, 2015, 03:17:51 PM »
Can you please give me a reason NOT to buy a very good cond. low miles ( 14k ) 1996 1100 cali at a very good reasonable price ?

I was looking for an EV ( just for the tubeless ) when this cali came up.....

What to do ..... ?

I am looking for a cali as daily / beater transportation since my RK sold .

Thanks.

1 reason tho poor.. the TPS is not like the EV and on and I don't believe there is a Harley cross over. (or is it a carb bike?)
2, the seat is not very well formed especially if it has the cigar box CPU right under your tailbone.

Looks nice and a decent price, too. The only downside I can give you is the 98 EV had significant upgrades, including tubeless wheels.

sorry but i only owned one EFI bike and sold it yesterday.

here's a similar bike with dreamer price so that one looks a steal..

whats up with he TPS ?
I only heard of one bad TPS on those particular bikes so wouldn't really worry but just sayin if you need to replace it the Guzzi part is in the $200+ range I think.. again I wouldn't worry over that..
the forks got more robust with the 98EV too.
you can make a T3 clone but be aware the steering neck is about 3" taller on that bike so fitment/ look of a T3 tank will take creativity. the swing arm of the T3 is shorter so it won't look the same there either. but it will look good if done right.

really if you get it under $2k it would be a great buy. tell him your really looking for an EV where you get more, tubeless, fork, maybe bags/mounts, less dorky dash..(they can be found for $2500 if patient)

Nothing wrong with that TPS. Mine stayed within adjustment the entire 75k I owned it. The P8 computer is a chunker and lives under the seat,,which can complicate the T3seat fitment, but can be relocated by using a  thinner( Odyssey?) battery. The TBs were easy to dial in using only vacuum gauges.  The "dorky" instrument panel contains a speedometer that does not chew itself into non operation unlike the later one... Forks can be be improved ( I used Sonic springs) and better( not leaking as the Bitubo) shocks will help the rear. Rest of  T3 clone should not be that big of a deal, only thing sticking out 4 me are the frame rails at the rear kicking up a bit. All in all sounds like a great project. Cheers

Thank you all for the reply.

I have weird taste for motorcycles LOL but i love the look of the old dash .

My idea is to trash the seat , turn signals and fenders and maybe the gas tank but i can live with it.
Put a straight 70s style long seat/bench . Middle controls and a set of hard bags and of course a small handle bar , like t's models.
I like the EV tubeless wheels but any rim can be sealed anyway , so thats no brainer.
Brakes , are good for what i am used to .
I have a lead on a 93 carbed cali , that maybe be a good alternative to the 96 . I really don't like efi bikes .... if i can avoid them , i do .
If i cannot , I can leave with them but if i can make a choice , i get the carbed bike .

Keep you posted , thanks again.

I like the old dash, too. Your main problem, as far as I can see it with what you want to do, is packaging that computer. It's huge.

There is the air filter and snorkel under the tank which can make tank changes a pain.
The big P8 ECU will need relocated for much seat improvement.
Cast iron rotors.
I never cared for the front suspension on my 1994. I tried new springs and cartridges, but they still were not that great.
The P8 fuel injection system, other than being large, is a fairly simple thing. No real reason to avoid it.

mmmhhh ???

I have no experience with califormia bikes and what is hidden underneath gas tank and seat . From you guys are saying i should leave the tank where is is which i like it too , and see how to work out the seat.
Ok , i am going to go to check out the bike and talk to the seller and see how it goes....

Question : will it be a problem or less than a problem to swap seat on a EV model rather than a early cali like the 1996 ?

I believe all the concern regarding the seat may or may not be a problem.  I have ridden a '96 Cali for 14 years and never had a problem with the seat, even with 500 mile days.  I've had it recovered once and specified no changes to the foam or shape.  It all comes back to the individual.  I'm 5'6", 150 lbs, with a 32 inch inseam and the seat fits me to a 'T'.  YMMV depending on your build.

What i am willing to do is to change the riding position , i want to re create the 70's style riding position adding mid controls ( like gt mille or T , T3 )
and add a flat seat . like a long flat bench.
That is the reason why i would like to change seat .

Ok, the Aero engine uses that system. I would have loved to be able to use it on the Lario. It's simple and robust. I already had it, and it wouldn't cost anything. (Guzzi content)   ;D But...I would that had to make new intake manifolds, no biggie..New linkages.. minor biggie.. a new harness.. major biggie..and package that computer *somewhere* on the Lario. Couldn't be done. Believe me, I did a lot of measuring. It is 40mm thick x 165mm wide x 230mm long. (!)
Guzzi did it by building the seat around it.  ;)

My bro KiwiKev has the same bike, he rides it to and fro every day in all weather.

He reckons it's the best Guzzi ever built.

Well, in that case, especially considering your location, I can give you a reason not to buy the Cali!

Buy this instead, for less money: http://wildguzzi.com/forum/index.php?topic=76372.0

Speaking as the happy owner of real T3, that's what I'd recommend. If you want more torque, do the 948cc conversion!

YES THEY WERE. the Jackal stone and later Bassa had tube rims but every EV came with tubeless rims. 2 styles but they were tubeless'
