Anyone know what this is?
« on: July 19, 2015, 11:42:14 AM »
I found this little dark red plastic clamp thing under my bike one day. I assume it's a wiring component but since I don't know very much about such things I thought it was better to ask the professionals. I ride a 2012 Moto Guzzi Griso 8V SE, could this have come off my bike?

Only other thing I can think is that I ran over it somewhere near my parking spot and it stuck to the front tire long enough to then fall off when I parked my bike. It just seemed suspicious that it was lying on the ground, directly under the center of my motorcycle.

Any thoughts?

Thanks in advance guys!

We'll need more pictures.

It's definitely an electrical connector for 22 to 16 gauge wire, but I can't tell you what it came from.

Looks like it's for creating some type of "T" connection to an existing wire.

It is a device to make a cheap quick splice into an existing circuit.  I doubt if it came from your bike unless a previous owner
added something electrical to the machine.

That is a wire tap. You crimp it on a wire, then you can plug a spade connector into the edge of it.
It is NOT a factory part. If someone added some wiring or lighting to your bike, it may be part of that. Odds are more likely that it is scrap that you picked up.

Also -- it appears not to have been used. So it didn't come off your bike.

it's a crappy way to splice into an existing wire, I dislike them and would only use it in an emergency or on something I didn't care much about. I do agree we are going to need more pictures maybe some in infrared

It looks like one of those connectors included in a kit for hooking up trailer lights.  You go into the trunk and find the wires leading to your car's tail lights and then clamp the leads of the trailer connector onto them.

in which case something that once worked no longer works.

The good news is that it appears unused so its an extra now.

You can't win around here ...    The OP probably read one of the many threads asking for help where the only response was "This Thread Is Useless Without Pictures!"

Just trying to play it safe, and look what happens ...

No doubt that you can't hurt part identification with extra photos.  It was funny though, I kept scrolling down, expecting to come to the "reply" button, and the photos kept coming.  I wanted the "Reply" button, not the "quote" button!

Good work, ChappyBoffins!  All the photos were of excellent quality, well lit, and well focused.

We know it's some sort of "quick-splice", but I've never seen one like that.  It's not a "Scotch-Lok" (the pride of D*mn Previous Owners worldwide), it's not a wire-nut, and not a crimp-splice.

The fact that it's on the ground unused is a blessing to someone ....

It's a gremlin for future motor vehicle owners to go bat-shit crazy over after spending every spare minute after work for a week trying to track the source of an anomalous/intermittent electronic failure or diminished performance symptom.

Or that's the best I can guess. A close-up might help.
