Huge gallery of amateur 70s/80s roadracing pics
« on: July 26, 2015, 02:04:56 PM »
The late 70s into the 80s.....I was just a boy looking up to my MX racing older brother and grew into a teenaged kid tearing up the AZ desert on a two smoker Maico when these came out so I find them really cool because I missed the era and didn't live it.

I'm sure many here did live it and might enjoy these. Hope everyone is having a good Saturday.  :thumb:

Very nice collection of photos.  I've just scratched the surface so far.  Thanks!

I have some galleries on smugmug of AHRMA racing, and one of the MotoGP in Indy. I will post links if anyone is interested.

The posting of photos can be a big help to insure against memory loss. The young riders that are joining the forum can reflect back to the "Good old Days". Back in those times when a 650cc engine was the sharp end on the stick, and if your bike had a 5 speed transmission you were the king of the hill.

In fact I would like to see a sticky spot on the forum just for motorcycle photos regardless of brand .

Thanks for sharing.

Had to post them. This site and several of you guys here have been a huge help to me when my LM needs attention over the years as I'm a late comer to the "classic" Guzzi world. I wasn't old enough to drive when the bikes I like most were coming out. I don't dislike modern bikes and enjoy them as well but they don't hit the spot for me the same way.

I really love the look of the race bikes from that era and I agree that those pics are a fantastic record for reference. Somthing between what is considered "cafe" today and a modern race inspired sportbike. I suppose Superbike fits but some of them are just a little outside of that mold. Whatever they are, they're beautiful to me because they're still mostly "sit on" bikes but they have some aero concessions and technology was changing in a big way at the time.

I especially liked the story in pictures of the guy who lost the transmission early on and later the top end of his bike in a 30 hour endurance event. He finished the race by cannibalizing his friends bike (same model) who made the mistake of riding it to the race that day.

The shots of Kenny Roberts and other legends just hanging out are cool as well. Good stuff.

In the pits at the Superbike race, Charlotte Motor Speedway, 1977 I believe.  Race was won by Mike Baldwin on a Le Mans and I think another Guzzi came in second.  I was 14 I think.
