possible starting issues V11 Sport...
« on: August 09, 2015, 09:30:53 PM »
I've a 2004 V11 Sport Ballabio.  On one cold start out of about ten there is a slight delay from when I push the starter button, maybe half second or so, before the starter engages.   No solenoid click, just the very slight delay, then the starter rolls the engine over at the normal  cranking speed and the bike starts.   The battery is a near new odyssey and is at full charge. Fuel pump humms and all the lights light up when I turn the key on.  And here's the thing--the delay thing happens only on cold start up.  I can shut the bike off, then start again any number of times and there's no delay.  It never happens on a hot engine.  I have high quality replacement relays, and all connectors, battery terminals, grounds, starter connections are tight and clean.  I am thinking there may be something going on with the starter or solenoid, or perhaps the starter handlebar switch, although it looks fine inside and I sprayed it with contact cleaner.  Anybody experience this sort of thing before?    Thanks!

Seems like it's the bullet connectors on the left side of the bike under the fuel tank. Remove the  tank, and they'll be close to the steering head. Pull them apart, mechanically clean them, add a little Vaseline, and reconnect. You should be golden. I had that issue on my V11.
If you have the original relays, get some from Pyro Dan in WI. Cheap insurance, and better than the factory units. A Google search is your friend here.

Sounds like it could be a dirty solenoid to me. <shrug>

Everything elecrical is clean and tight.  I have replacement relays already.  I have had problems with the switch gear--kill switch, clutch safety switch, side stand safety switch--before so may just replace the starter switch and see if there's an improvement.  May also pull the starter and bench test it to see if I can duplicate the delay start.

Over oiled solenoid perhaps, viscous grease.

You could hang a small lamp on the starter solenoid trigger wire, that would tell you if the delay is before or after that point.

Make sure the ground is securely fastened at the gearbox, I know of several spine frame bikes that let out the magic smoke because that was loose and the start current made it's way back through small ground wires causing them to melt into other wires
