Old Tires ...
« on: August 13, 2015, 12:12:18 PM »
In this month's AMA magazine, there's a writeup about AMA Vintage days.   There's a gal there on a clean-looking white 1965 Honda Sport 65.

She says that her daughter rode the bike on a 400 mile ride in the mountains in Maine .... ON THE ORIGINAL TIRES!!

You would think that a riding mom would have more sense to write, and that the AMA would have more sense than to publish, a story about a young lady riding on the road in the mountains on 48-year-old rubber.   That's the motorcycle version of Russian Roulette ...

Maybe this article belongs in the "Stupidest Thing Anyone's Said About Motorcycles" thread.   I'll bet a dollar that the AMA mag gets more than one letter about that ....

Almost unbelievable. I would think that tires that old would be petrified and badly cracked. I'm amazed.

I know how dumb it is because I'VE done it myself and learned better ...

... In 1999, I bought a 1969 BSA with the original tires on it.   There was quite a bit of "crazing" in the rubber but the tread was good so I figured Oh, it'll be right.

I almost fell on them once, due to how hard and slick they were, so I finally got smart and decided to change them.   I spooned them halfway off the rim, and then took them off the rest of the way with my hands, like you do.    My thumb actually went through the sidewall of the tire as I peeled it off; it was as weak as wet cardboard ....

The AMA published an article about AMA Vintage Days about a woman cruising around the AMA VMD who told the AMA writer for the AMA magazine that her daughter had ridden a MotoGiro event on a Honda with 1968 tires owned by an AMA Life Member .....?

Why do you always get a warped one ... ?

For what it's worth.. a guy I know just bought a bike for his wife. I looked at the date on the tires. One's an 00 and the other is an 02. Told him that he really ought to change them out, but it's falling on deaf ears. "They're brand new."

As a public service they could have placed an opinion at the end of the story regarding the hazards of riding with old tires.

No doubt, the following month will have numerous letters to the editor to clear that up.

It seems all we do on these tire threads is go round and round.
If you wish to know what a man is, place in him authority.
False accusations reflect more on the accuser than the accused.
They can take everything from you, including your life, except your honor and integrity.  That you must give away.
Do or don't do. There is no try.

Yes, but does it have adequate thread depth ?

Do you believe this thread should be side walled ?
That's the combustion chamber of the turbo shaft. It is supposed to be on fire. You just don't usually see it but the case and fairing fell off.
