There are currently 10 stickies.

8 of them are Guzzi events that members will be interested in knowing  about.

2 of them are topics which Luap wants perma-pinned for new members.

There were very few in July and August.

Like May and June, September is a busy month for Guzzi get-togethers.

I apologize for any inconvenience the stickies have caused you.

On one forum they made one sticky thread and in it were links to the old stickies. In sub fora they had "Best of" stickies making it easier for newbies (or forgetful oldies) to find good info quickly. Face it, when using the search function, if you don't get the term right (or maybe you are looking for the correct term!) a search can be a show stopper.

With one pinned thread, leave more room for the rest of the topics (and you can add a LOT of threads inside the sticky without ruining things).

In fact you could organize it so that you had links to all the Griso threads, all the Convert threads - it would like having sub-forums without the sub-forums (or think of it as your master thread merge!).

Compiling the links and pasting them into topic-specific search threads would be a full-time job!

Stickies should be stickies, events that expire in 2 weeks should go in an event sub/alternative forum.

Ah, morphing into the "oil thread" of generic forum conversations: the categories/topics/sub-division thread.

Yes , it means the steel cut oats and such critical topics drop off the bottom too soon. 😃

Keep it just like it is please. Yes, it gets a bit busy in the peak rally months. So be it.

The sticky system has been in place for several years:

-Rallies and campouts stickied 1-month out and removed the day the event starts.
-Breakfast rides and lunch rides posted a week or two out and removed the day of the event.

Right now, there are a couple of "World Guzzi Day" threads I've stickied that fall outside the "rules", but since they're promoting both riding our Moto Guzzis, and Moto Guzzi in Mandello, I've put them up a little early.  Actually, I'm hoping that more people around the country will post "World Guzzi Day" event threads that I can sticky.  It's a great way to promote the motorcycles, the company, and its heritage.

It won't be long before the stickies mostly disappear for awhile.  Spring and fall months see more stickies than winter and summer.  November through March have almost no stickies.

Mr Tibiero may have been being a bit , er , silly . Geez , like Luap and Rocker don't have day jobs .

  Dusty

Sarcastic, possibly; silly, I don't think so.  Besides, the OP is quite capable of speaking for himself.

I don't have a problem with the sticky system as it is -- except for pulling events on the day they start, but I raised that with the mods; they felt differently; so be it; I'm retired and couldn't do what they do even without a full-time job!

But I thought the OP's comment was understandable, just as I thought R59's response(s) well put.

Lordy, I may have to hurl; I sound almost as Kumbaya as you.

Yes, sarcasm. There are 2 important stickies, new member instruction and introduction. To bury them in a pile of 10 stickies, dilutes their importance. When does it stop? When we have half a page? There is no more work for mods to have a dedicated sub forum for rallies and events, than it is to make them stickies. It could actually be less work, since only mods can make stickies, but any member could post to an event sub-forum. I'm not hard over on this, just an observation. I know what a PITA it is to mod a forum.

Compiling the links and pasting them into topic-specific search threads would be a full-time job!

We had two to three mods for every sub-forum so the work load was spread out. The initial work load would be high; but for here I'd just add things as needed or suggested instead of working full time on it and indexing the entire site. Once it matures a bit it's not too bad. But you'd need/want at least one other person to help out a bit at first. Things like dog food, oil threads and such can be safely allowed to drift away and die.  :boozing:

Good point there. Speaking only for myself... I note that as I'm not a rally guy for the most part - if something truly important were sticinated, I'd miss it as I blow past the rally listings.

This made me look at the general significance of them from other's points of view. As the only way that I can do this is to mote the number of replies and views, they seem to be below average of the numbers for posts below them and even on the next page as necessitated by the weight of electro-post-its.

Perhaps my bias is actually fueled by my personal and professional disdain for real-world post-its. Their random loss or their open access to passers-by have been a thorn in my side since their first bepoxed introduction! Don't even get me started on their malicious hitch hiking migration through a workplace, undesired. :boozing:

Anyhow - Another forum to which I belong has rallying info in a drop down thus occupying a single slot on the initial page. Is that a onerous task to set up? I wouldn't know - it's about all I can do to sign in here and not lose my own posts.

Feel I should maybe chime in here with a couple of my thoughts:

* Yes, stickies can be obtrusive at times.  Especially during the rally and riding seasons.  That's why I don't like anything stickied longer than two weeks.  If something stays up for too very long, it becomes redundant and no one will see it anyway.
* Compiling all stickies into one thread would be...uh...redundant .
* Creating subcategories for events.  Nope, sorry. Not gonna happen here.  I do that, then I'll be inundated with requests to add other categories.  A year or two goes by and this board will be broken into so many pieces it would take someone an hour just to find what they wanted.
* Adding additional moderators.  Nope.  We're good.  Too many chiefs and not enough braves would create a real 'sticky' situation.
* I have looked at (and even played with) other options and ways to do things.  Especially on my test site.  I've put this together best I know how to keep it running fast, clean and keeping the vision of a "virtual campfire" ongoing.

I am always open to new ideas though :thumb:

Now, I need to get back to work.  Ciao for now

The "new idea" is ... leave it like it is and don't fool with it!!   The "New Members" need a bit of a test anyway, to make sure they can handle posting on a high-quality list like this.    Let 'em scan 10 stickies to find out they're not supposed to be rude on line ... it'll do 'em good .....

Why, when I joined up, we had to program our first WG post using assembler-level code and 6-bit ASCII, uphill both ways ....
