 Nice young couple next door , unfortunately they acquired an overly aggressive pit bull . Probably not all that mean , just stupid . Incessant barking at any sign of movement in my back yard . After pondering on a solution that would keep the peace , decided on the water hose method . One quick squirt , and she runs for cover . She is a bit stubborn , still testing for a weak spot in the plan , however she seems to learning that the price to be paid isn't worth it

Did you tell the neighbors that's what you're doing?  Best to keep things on the up and up.

 Not yet , but considering that I have mentioned the problem in conversation , and they can surely hear the constant barking , seems a very gentle way to control the situation . Really , she has barely been hit by the water from 30 feet away , now all it takes is the sight of the nozzle to send her away quietly Being a dog person precludes any violence on my part .

Yeah, you should talk to the neighbors and they will most likely to be ok, plus it's very non aggressive and doesn't involve you yelling "shut up" to the dog!

Yeah, great plan ... until some perp creeps in your backyard heading for your home some night, and the dog stays mum.   

Seriously, have had the problem and it can be maddening.  Suspect another, less tolerant, neighbor will eventually dial 9-1-1 and the rest is ineluctable bureaucracy.

I bought some of those percussion type firecrackers. Toss one on a hard surface. Pow!. I only had to use 3 for the dogs to learn to leave every time we came out. The BB's ran the yapper off but he would stand behind cover and resume incessant yapping. The other two would then join in. Less than a year later, they moved back to Tennessee. Michael was OK. Shannon was a class 1A B____. We tried talking about it but the dog's behavior was "so cute".

 Sans water hose the perp doesn't stand a chance    The bureaucracy , "ineluctable" or otherwise , is what I am trying to avoid .

In my experience, dog owners generally are either deaf to the barking of their dogs or subliminally enjoy that their dog can annoy people without their having to claim responsibility for it.  Say anything negative about their dogs and they immediately take offense.  Best way to start a neighbor war.  Try to get law enforcement involved in quelling a neighbor's dog noise and learn a quick lesson about futility and frustration.

True enough, I suppose, in some places, but my own experience has been different. 

While "approach" to the LE side of things no doubt plays a role, some jurisdictions are supportive of such complaints and will take action.  Even in less-responsive places, IMO&E, persistence, along with pressing local elected officials, helps.

When our Norwegian Elk hound was a puppy it barked at anyone that walked past. The best of many good advices was to take a full bucket of water and thow at it when it was barking. Shut that hound up in a week. :-)

Nothing worse than a barking dog.It can ruin the best neighborhood.It really is a measure of the stupidity of people.You should have to take a 6 month course to get license to own one.Some of the worst are people with little dogs who think they don't need to be trained.I argue with my brother who says its good to just let a dog run free and wild.I told him to get a chicken then.

You can test out very quickly whether they are actually a "nice young couple".    Stop by one day (maybe with some cookies or a pie) and let them know the problem.    See what they say.

My experience has been that people with "overly aggressive pit bulls" that they allow to bark constantly have something wrong with them, and are NOT in fact "nice".   

Be interesting to see what happens.

 They are in fact a nice young couple . He is the only neighbor in 25 years that has actually helped me on a major project , instead of expecting to get their house worked on for nothing . I'm willing to cut them some slack . Like stated before , the dog probably isn't all that mean , just loud and obnoxious. Their other dog is a complete sweetheart .

Here in West Chester Heights...populatio n 3...I simply get a jug of Maker's Mark.  Nothing affects  me after that and I don't think it affects the neighbors.

If you wake up soaking wet in the morning, you'll know how the neighbors stopped your uncontrollable barking .....
