Rear Transmission Housing (grey) Leak
« on: August 31, 2015, 12:24:14 PM »
I have a 2007 Breva 750 and the lower section of the rear Transmission Housing (That's what MG calls it), a more apt description would be rear end.  Anyhow I have a hairline crack running from the axle all the way down to the bottom of the unit.  I can get a replacement part (#32350310); but am kinda concerned about how hard it would be to transfer the parts of the cracked unit into a new one.  Has anyone done this?

Thanks!

Hi there!

First I'd get confirmation that you've got a crack and not just a casting mark/flaw.  A leak from a more traditional place -- like a seal -- can migrate down a cosmetic flaw and make the flaw look structural.

Otherwise, it can be fairly technical getting the gears properly shimmed as you move them into the new punkin.  If you're not completely comfortable working with shims and mesh patterns, there are folks that specialize in setting them up.

You might save some grief by buying a complete unit from one of the usual suspects out on the Ebay.

Picture please. The smallblock castings do have a line on them that is sometimes mistaken for a crack.

All:
After examining the lower and upper case with a magnifying glass, I've determined what I thought was a really straight crack is actually a casting seam.
I've still got a leak near the rear wheel so will investigate further.  Sure am glad the case was not cracked! I appreciate the assists!
Thanks guys!

There are two seals in the bevelbox, three if you count the pinion seal but that is unlikely to be the issue. Unfortunately getting to them is a bit of a sod. Somebody did a very good photo-essay on the process recently though. Worth searching it.

Where are you located? There is a chance some Guzzi wrench much nearby can help you out. If you close to southern central  Pennsylvania I can. I know I have a small seal in stock and possiy a large.
