If you used to live there, you know about Rudy's - always pretty good. I didn't think a chain outfit could do BBQ, but Rudy's can.

I haven't lived there since 2007, but I'd go looking up around Vanderpool and Leakey, and then over towards Johnson City, to find some of the small local joints in the Hill Country. You won't find pulled pork, but you should find some good ribs and sausage, maybe some sliced shoulder or butt. As you know, Texas BBQ is all about the rub - and the variety of meats...

yeah, there's a Rudy's not far from me and it's not too bad.  I wouldn't compare it to Arthur Bryant's or even local chain Billy Sims.   I've tried the famous BBQ in Lockhart and agree that it's the best beef BBQ around.  But they use the beef rub on the pork and it tastes a little like bacon rather than BBQ ribs IMO.  I plan to be at the Hill Country for the Harvest Classic.

1. "Cincinnati chili" is like "St. Louis-style pizza." So god-awful that nobody in any other location will eat it. I love you, original poster, but I can't stand Skyline chili.

2. "Mexican Weather Forecast" sounds like some scatological sex act.

whoooa there on the St Louis pizza.  I do miss Imo's.  Great stuff.

In New Mexico, chili is actually just that.....chili as in chili peppers or a sauce made with chili peppers as the main ingredient; could be red or green, put on burgers, rice, beans, burritos, you name it. Hell, even McD's in the Land of Enchantment sells burgers with green or red chili (at least they did when I lived there a few years back).

Maybe Skyline Chili is to Ohioans what Poi is to Hawaiians and Vegemite is to Australians.

We have a certain WGer that had a most unfortunate experience with an avocado , can't remember who , but it wasn't pretty. Hmm , was it Semper Guzzi ?

Mexican Weather Forecast

Last night we went out for dinner. I had Cincinnati Style Chili ....

We'll add this to the list of foods that people love or hate with a religious fervor.

As far as I can tell, here are the foods for which people will fight to the death in defense of the "One and Only Proper Recipe".

1.  Chili

2.  Buffalo Chicken Wings

3. Philly Cheese Steak Sandwich

4. North Carolina Barbeque

5. Texas Barbeque

6. Brunswick Stew

7. Chicago Deep Dish Pizza

Any one of these can start a fight .....

I've eaten some of my favorite foods in San Antonio, particularly Mexican, Chinese, burgers, and Gulf Seafood.  But I've not had any really good BBQ there.  In fact, other than brisket and beef, not had outstanding BBQ (pork & ribs) in the entire state.

I plan on heading there is a month or so, what do you recommend?  (BTW- I used to live there)

Come through Terrell Texas and I'll buy you some Eddie Deen's BBQ.  It's local but he catered the Bush the elder Inauguration, The Bush the younger Governor Inauguration, and the Bush the Junior Presidential Inauguration.  '

One of his sons is sort of a friend of mine and runs one of the restaurants, and I believe he has ever-so-slightly tweaked the sauce.  Anyway, I'm serious.

There's a huge Eddie Deen's south of the convention center in Dallas.  Perhaps a few more stores in DFW?

Not really a big BBQ fan , but Muskogee is famous for the stuff . As for Cincinnati style chili , there have been several attempts to introduce 3 way into Oklahoma , never very successfully . Most Okies probably think it is a reference to ... well , you know  Give me decent Italian , or good Mexican anytime . When Pete and Jude visited , we went to a Mexican place , the look on Jude's face when they brought out her bucket sized Margarita was priceless , and when the waitress began serving the 3 plates necessary for her fajitas , she just stared in disbelief

It's illegal in 37 states and all the protectorates, and it's seriously ugly.  Some say it involves a 2-4-2 steamer, storage batteries, and beer.  Some say no beer, but lots of dill and rosemary.  There are no eyewitness accounts for the obvious reasons.

I find it interesting that people who've never even tasted Cincinnati chili can badmouth it. I think that's called Contempt Prior to Investigation. It's proof against all scientific advancement. It also might keep them from trying a meal that they might enjoy. I guess that being different means being ostracised.

Agreed! I prefer to investigate before I say for certain.
