I have a chance to buy a 2012 Guzzi SE. Any thoughts or suggestions or comments?

Good choice!  Make sure it has the upgraded roller tappet motor.

Find out if it is a roller or flat tappet bike. If flat tappet adjust price accordingly. Make sure that the throttle stop screws haven't been messed with and when it is started cold it should immediately settle into a steady idle at 1200-1250 rpm. If it won't run without goosing the throttle and then when warm has a low idle? Run away!

Get the suspension tuned for you.
Consider getting it remapped (see the thread here or on GrisoGhetto.com)

Things like handle bar risers, peg lowering, seat redoing etc. are pretty much to fine tune the fit to you. Other than mapping, risers, lowered pegs and russell day long seat mine is stock.

I find the large Griso tank bag a nice addition. Over time I've added the Griso saddle bags, rear rack, a Givi top case, Stelvio hand guards, Bike Master grip heaters (super product! - but since prefer heated glove liners) - and the Russell Day Long seat. Some folks are not bothered by the stock seat but that thing was out to kill me. Now she is a very good sport tourer.

Not bad in the dirt either......  :grin:

Oh, added the Fender Extender. Looks factory and keep a lot of crud off the front of the engine. Pants that won't stay up and short fenders just make no sense to me.  :angry:

It is Tenni Green. If I check the idle when it is cold, and then again after a few miles, will that give me the information I need. Roller and flat tappet don't mean a lot to me.

Yes, if the idle is low when you've ridden the bike for a few miles it will be an indicator of tappet failure.

I would suggest you familiarise yourself with the relative differences between the flat tappet and roller tappet systems as it is the most likely cause of problems with the bike, (After poorly researched 'Tuning' aids and poor servicing.). As a Tenni Green SE I'm pretty sure it will of started life as a flat tappet engine but it may of been upgraded to rollers. This is why it is important to find out.

If it is a Tenni, then it is a flat tappet.  Rollers didn't show up until half way through the first run of the Diavolo Neros that followed the Tenni.

Well I'd hope any Gizzi dealer could handle it but a lot of them don't seem to even know how to balance throttle bodies so it's hard to say.

I think the roller fix is just coming on the radar here in the states. I doubt many Tenni's have been done. I just turned 10K miles on mine, probably early to be worried about it. I'd rather not spend the bucks to have it done (have a XR650L taking all my money right now!).

Is Guzzi warranting them no matter the year?

Once more with feeling.......

It may be slightly different in the U.S. due to your warranty requirements but in most of the world the requirement is that any machine that has a tappet failure will have a roller kit supplied as long as.....

1. The machine has a full, documented, service history performed by an authorised Guzzi dealer or service agent.

2. The service schedule must of been adhered to WRT both DISTANCE and TIME. This means that the bike should of been to the shop every 10,000Km or every 12 months regardless of mileage.

3. If the failure occurs during the warranty period it is fully covered as would any other non owner imposed failure.

4. If the failure occurs outside of the warranty period then the kit will be supplied but installation will have to be paid for by the customer.

5. The factory's suggested preparation for return to service after installation is woefully inadequate. It is worth paying to have the job done properly.

Gracias to all. I am grateful for the advice and for a place to find information. Wish me luck. I rode my last Guzzi for 25 years and then turned it over to my son. That was a while back and I am looking forward to riding again.
