small block clutch

Sorry if this topic has been posted before but how do I measure clutch wear?
Clutch is working fine but thought I should inspect every few months?
PS what should you expect from a small block clutch? 25,000 miles? Or is that optimistic

I might be wrong but I wouldn't bother, just keep it adjusted correctly. My V65 had 60,000 on the original clutch and still going strong when I sold it.

My Breva clutch just went south @ 44Kmi.  so I will be finding out all about this.  Had my bike worked on @ a dealer and when the clutch blew I noticed the cable adjustment was not where I thought it was when I took the bike in for something else.    So much for cable covers...........

This is an inspection hole. Isn't it?

Adjusting clutch. - My logic reasons - if it feels right and everything is tidy and in good order then don't adjust it. I assume that the bite should be somewhere near half pulled in clutch and that the clutch should have a fairly consistent spring all the way through the pull except that less tension (but not complete slackness) in first few mm of pull is acceptable, even desirable?

I thought that hole was a vestigial timing inspection hole.

I've never heard of anyone inspecting a Guzzi clutch for wear through it, but I've only been riding Guzzis a little over a decade and had 3 of them.

Certainly none of the OEM service manuals for my models mentioned such a thing.

Are there any bikes where there is a periodic clutch inspection?

Nope, as Kev sez the inspection hole is a hangover from days of yore.

Just keep it adjusted correctly and ride. Asking how long it will last is like asking how long is a piece of string. It depends on how you use it. Usually though they will last a very long time.

The clutch on my V7C has lasted 120,000km, and the local dealer has had one customer who went through 2 clutches in 20,000km. How long is a piece of string indeed. It will be interesting to ask Hendrick if he remember how many clutches he's replaced on his 500,000km Monza. Will try to remember to ask him at the rally on the weekend.

I read that if I turn the fly wheel I might just see 'S'inistra and 'D'estra for finding T.D.C. Seems though no one doe it that way.

Not any more. Since the timing is controlled by a Hall effect trigger on the front of the camshaft there is no need for timing marks on the flywheel or, extrapolating from there, TDC marks.

And dont forget! Check your rear brake disc thickness regularly too!
