Springfield [a very few photographs]
« on: September 07, 2015, 06:03:22 PM »
Saturday night at the short track (for some non-Grand National races).  It's nice to see these two head-to-head again.  That's John Kocinski's amazing clean Honda (which never lost).

The LBM team's salute to Neil Keen using his distinctive number plate

There was a nice crowd at the Mile.  Perhaps not the sell-out that was usual in the mid-eighties, but pretty good.

Johnny Lewis had a rough get-off in turn one during the second practice session (front tire lost traction, regained, lost again), and while not seriously hurt, he was out for the race.  Too bad, as he was fifth fastest after the first practice session.

Thanks to the several Guzzi riders who stopped by the LBM pits.  Guzzi riders out there might even have out-numbered Ducati riders.  Perhaps if Troy had been there...

Kocinski's Honda , with Jon on board , holds the lap record at a couple of short tracks in So Cal , even faster than modern bikes.
He is a case study in how not to deal with HRC .

"You don't know who the eff I am"

Still , a very fast racer , and not such a bad guy now that he is older . Knew his dad fairly well .

Good to see Carr and Morehead haven't stopped banging bars .

Chris Carr and Joe Kopp put on a great show in the Bultaco Astro race.

Shayna and her Kawi

Starting grid for the main event. It was 95 degrees, but we were in the shade.

Turn 4 of the 1st lap, main event.

Had a great time.  I just rode home and kicking back.

I am eating crow regarding the Triumphs.   Two of them made the Feature.  They contended for a while when the top few bikes were saving their tires.

Glad to meet everyone.  Sorry I didn't see Crusty.

Darren, John and I rode up together, Doug and his dad followed up. The races were as good as ever.  Bryan Smith was in third place entering the front stretch and one by inches.  Lots of Kaws racing now  probably the most common bike.  Also Nichole Mees won her heat and the feature had a husband and wife as well as brother and sister (Texters') competing.

Great Italian food for a couple of meals.  Got to see Lincoln's tomb.

The ride had it's typical moments of fun and drama.  Twilight Zone moment for me,  the Greenie speedo froze at 87 mph and my watched stopped all noted when I got to John's place.   I got a battery for the watch on Sunday and by golly the speedo is as jumpy a ever- not accurate but not frozen.  Other stuff happened too (Guzzi content).  Glad to see John made it back.

That reference to John K..... is that the same guy who showed real promise on asphalt?
If it is... how old is he now? That was a while back.

Yeah , a Little Rock AR product , his dad was a Triumph dealer there . Funny how many of those Americans that dominated GP motorcycle racing in that era were from Louisiana , Texas , Arkansas .

It'd be really nice if small displacement racing could inspire some of that latent talent back to the top podiums. Crazy as it sounds but the Malaysians have more competitive scooter racing than anywhere in N. America does in sub-400's class

Well , there are those guys in Oregon that run a very competitive Honda 160 racing series , and there is a very lively racing series in England based on BSA Bantams , some so highly modified as to be almost unrecognizable .
