V7 fuel filter change HELP!

I'm trying to get the fuel pump & filter assembly out of my 2013 V7 Racer (metal tank, 1 TB), and am not having any luck.
I removed the six bolts that attach it to the tank, and have it loose, but, can't figure out which way to turn it to fit everything through the hole.

If anyone here has successfully done this, PLEASE let me know the trick!

If you can get a glimpse of the wire tie that holds the whole mess together, give it a snip.  That makes it easier to get OUT.  But then you have to use one after you replace the filter and wrestle it back IN.

Just be patient (not one of my virtues) and gentle.

The hoses on the unit tend to hang up on the inside of the flange where the pump mounts.  Thing is it is just about impossible to see them when you are removing the pump assembly.  Just keep working it and it will come out....

I'm wondering if my 2014 Stone has the same fuel filter issue?  I'm lucky in that I have ethanol free premium nearby and always do my fill-ups there unless I'm on the road.  Would you guys recommend switching the filter during winter shut-down or am I okay with the ethanol free?

Yes, your 2014 should have the same filter.

No one can say if the filter will or will not fail.

Most are replacing it here because of ONE (maybe 2) reports, years ago of a filter separating and failing.

I'm coming around to the conclusion that maybe it was just defective and it wasn't a problem being plastic.

But I'll likely break down and replace mine this winter just to be sure.

My 07 Norge filter hadn't failed when I changed it out in 08.. but it would have. It was a nasty looking thing. You're probably ok if you can get no alcohol fuel, though.

I moved the filter to OUTSIDE the tank on my Calvin (when I had It). Just ran a proper fuel line straight across the pump, and put the filter in-line under the tank.  It will be much easier for its new owner to change the filter.  Wonder if there's room to do that on the V7?

I asked the exact same thing a couple of years ago http://wildguzzi.com/forum/index.php?topic=64937.0 .  Yes all it took was a bit of wiggling to get it out, I stopped and asked first just in case I also had missed something but I hadn't so I went back and worked it some more and got it out.  It wasn't difficult to put back in as I recall.

These days fuel filters are arguably lifetime components. Yeah, if someone keeps that bike 30 years and stores it badly, and gets shit in the tank, then maybe it will need to be done again. But more likely you won't have to worry about it, so why go through that trouble?

I agree with Kev m.  I did change the half-plastic filter on my '13 Stone to an all metal one, but I'm not even going to bother trying to find out what kind of filter my '16 Stone has.  My 2001 Prius has 150,000 mi on it and I've never thought about changing the fuel filter.  Changing the fuel filter isn't anywhere on the scheduled maintenance list, for either the car or the bikes.

The bike is 3 years old and has 8K miles on it, so I figure I won't need the next one for 8k miles longer now.

I'd say it's generally not a SCHEDULED maintenance item anymore. It's more a do if needed item without a specific interval, but often is never done.

Did my V7R last week - experienced some frustration myself. Wish I could tell you the magic combination of which way to turn and cajole the thing, along with combination of %$#$^ words and what not, but it did finally come out. No force was necessary, just a lucky combination of moves. Getting it back in was a bit of a challenge as well, but it does indeed go back. Once done, peace of mind is worth the effort with the all metal filter. (I went with the German Mahle).

On a side note, while the tank was off and lying on it's side on my bench, the little bit of gasoline that was pooled showed some fine, black particles in suspension. Upon closer inspection, these seemed to be of a hard, granular nature, like fine sand. Charcoal residue from the evap canister, maybe? Sure looked like it, so while I was at it, that wart was removed also. Very easy job on this bike and the underneath is so much neater now.

No.  It's just another lame excuse to remove a completely passive part of the tank vent system and stick it to the EPA.  You can just as easily demonstrate you're a 'bad boy' by wearing your pants around your knees and your hat sideways -- and you won't be crapping up the environment for everyone else.

IIRC someone contacted the filter manufacture and was told that the 150 filter is not specked from the maker for petrol.  The person making the enquiry was supplied with 145 part number which is specked for petrol.

I changed the fuel filter in my 13 V7 today it was half plastic
The plastic is yellowed but not brittle
It appears swollen but I didn't compare it to a new one
I installed a metal filter
Problem averted?
