Rear-Ended Today
« on: September 14, 2015, 11:29:22 AM »
I stopped for a school bus on my way to work, and a nice lady rear-ended me. I'm fine, but my Norge may be toast...

She really was very apologetic and kind. Fire, police, and others came. Just waiting now for my tow.

Thanks, everyone!

No cell phone, just a very dangerous, high-speed corner with a school bus stop in the middle of it. Thankfully, I flew! Who knew that I could fly? 😉

I'm sure everyone hopes you are OK but right now you don't know that. Go to the hospital or doc right away. It is very important. You might feel fine but that could be masking something.

Please go to the hospital.

Glad you are all right, any kids on the bus, if so the pictures should be all over the ITN by now. Good advice to get checked out just to be safe. Sorry for your Norge. The good news? Maybe one more cager will be looking out for motor cycles.

I agree with the advise to go to the hospital.  I was rear ended in 2006 and refused the ambulance.  didn't know until a week later that I fractured my wrist.  I flew over my windshield and had severe road rash that I treated "painfully".  glad you walked away.  steve

Glad you are ok, I always worry about getting rear ended and try to stay to one side of the vehicle in front so I don't end up as the meat in a sandwich.

Add, right after the collision you experience shock, your body goes into survival mode, people can walk away with spinal cord injuries only to become paralyzed later. Over the next few weeks, pay very close attention to what your body tells you.

Start keeping a journal of your physical condition, aches and pains, that sort of thing. You'll thank yourself later for doing it.

We always worry about the bike, to heck with it, they made more than one.

Even a slow collision can do lots of damage not immediately apparent.

There are lots of Norges, only one Jeff Olson.

Jeff, I worked at a school bus garage fro about 4 years around 1980.....Drivers run into the big yellow things all the time, truly amazing and it was before cell phones......You just happened to be in the way....
If the school bus stop is a dangerous situation that at least in part may have contributed to the accident , then you should try to report it somehow...
Good luck... and hoping you wife will hug you and you won't get hit with a frying pan for riding a Murdercycle    :thewife:

Glad you're able to walk away from this, but definitely get checked out, at least by your PCP.  If you got air, you could likely have a concussion.  When something similar happened to me, I waited until after seeing my Dr. to tell my wife.   :thewife:  You may not want to go that route.

Bet your wife won't care about the bike but will be thrilled and thankful you are OK. You could have been in a smart car and probably 2" thick so in a way, being on a bike saved your bacon. Spin it man, spin it.

Yes, sometimes fessing up to my better half is harder than getting hit from behind... She's coming to my office to join me for lunch in about 30 minutes.

"Honey, could I get a ride home from you tonight?"
"What? Why?"
"Well, I could get a cab if it is too much trouble..."

Get the Photon P3 LED stop lights w/ controller.

These things are BRIGHT and also flash when your brake is first applied.   They also have a version that adds turn signal function, and (also included in the base model) have a hazard light mode, great for bikes without hazard lights.

I just added these to my F800GT, and am so impressed with them that I want them on all my bikes.

And, for those looks-conscious people, they're quite inconspicuous when the bike is turned off.

One of my biggest fears, too. Glad to see you are (probably) ok, but as people are saying.. get checked out. One other thing. Her insurance company will want you to sign your rights away. Don't sign anything until you *know* you are all right.

Absolutely! I will make sure I am okay before I sign away my rights and settle. That is an important reminder.

My best friend is a partner is a large SF law firm, and he settled too quickly, before he was healed. Needed surgery afterwards!

I suppose you do what you can.

But if the woman can't see a 30,000 pound, 11 foot tall school bus with red flashing lights and strobes all over it, she's probably not going to see your 800 pound rider and motorcycle even if it had a fire-breathing dragon on the back .....

Sad but true.  That's actually one of the things I like about SoCal. I can sit or ride *between* cars, lessening the chance of getting rear ended. Lane splitting is safer, as far as I'm concerned.
