Only 1 call, really?
« on: September 19, 2015, 07:01:18 PM »
Since placing an ad here for my lemans 1000 i have had one call, and that one was to buy the seat.
Im taking suggestions at this point. I thought i might get more traction than this. I hate eblay, but i guess that is next.
Or, this is god telling me to keep her... :cheesy:

I can't get past the styling of the LM1000 but your price seems reasonable.. to sell a Guzzi you have to find the right guy.. have you tried CraigsList?
and yes posting pics might drive some interest.

Since I retired, I have a much reduced disposable income, or I would have jumped all over your Convert.

You only need one 'right' call to make a sale. Your buyer is out there, patience and keep advertising. This is the best site to share knowledge and probably the least likely to find a buyer

I suppose you posted this thread to discuss your classifieds ad.  I've just looked at it, and here's what I think:  It sucks.

This is your entire ad:

1985 LM4 LeMans 1000 for sale

1985 lemans 1000. Clean, runs spot on, lots of upgrades and extras. pictures on request....$4500 email oldmxdog61u@yahoo.com

Your price is top of the market for a run of the mill LeMans, and you offer no details as to why your bike can support that price, and from looking at your ad, you offer no encouragement for anyone to call you.

1st thing:  You really need to have pictures, or links to pictures of the motorcycle.

2nd thing:  You really need to sell your motorcycle.  You need to offer the reader some reason to email you for more details.  All the detail you can cram into a couple of paragraphs will help you.

Tell the reader these things:  Color.  Miles.  How long you have owned it.  Any aftermarket add-ons.  Tire type and condition.  How the bike runs and handles.  Why you're selling it.  And, anything else you can think of that someone may want to know.

Tell a story with your ad.  Give the people who may be interested in the bike a reason to want to buy your bike.  That will lead to more emails from interested buyers.

The ad you've posted has nothing.  And, that is the reason you haven't had anyone contact you about buying the bike.

Please take my post as constructive criticism.  Your ad can be better, and a better ad will help sell your LeMans.

In my 25 years of owning Guzzi's, I have found that selling them is tough work. They rarely bring what I believe is a fair price. Usually sell for bargain rates. There just aren't that many folks out there willing to try one.

Post on craiglist in various cities around the U.S.  All the bikes I have sold were outside of my local area.  I have had people fly and ride bikes back home.

I currently have a 1993 Kawaski ZR1100 for sale.  Rare bike.  I have posted ads for months.  Very little interest in the motorcycle.  Which is fine with me.  I do not need to sell it.  I really like riding it.  I have 5 motorcycle in my garage and it never hurts to keep something out there for sale.

I would also suggest of making a short video of it running, taking off and such. Make the potential buyer feel it so to speak.

Good luck, and agreed on the photos at least. I typically just ignore ads that don't have photos, which means I've likely missed out on some great deals...

Some folks may not even know what a LeMans is...so several high glossy pics would really be helpful!  A video would be even better :)  It might even be tempting enough to lure in a new Guzzi rider looking for a collector's item.

If your asking price of $4,500 has not gotten any calls on the bike your price is most likely around $1,000 to high. When items are priced too high people will not even call to make and offer because they believe you will think of their offer as a "low ball" offer.

Also the LM1000 is the least desirable of the Tonti series LeMans and what they sell for is a reflection of that. I'm not saying it isn't a great bike just not a very desirable one.

To make things worse the riding season is coming to a close for a lot of folks and this means bikes do not command the prices they do in the spring and the market as a whole is soft. Bikes are just not moving unless they are all but given away.

Yup, right now used bike prices are "flexible" , it's the last gasp to sell them this year.

I don't think $4500 is too high.  I just think there haven't been enough potential buyers see and hear about the bike.

Sporty Guzzis are only of interest to people who are interested in sporty Guzzis.  And, that's a small crowd.

The 1980s LeMans 1000 is a classic 1980s sporty bike.  But, no matter, the truth is there is a very limited pool of buyers looking for 30 year old Moto Guzzis.

I agree completely. If only considering people looking at any Guzzi, you have a very small audience. LM1000's don't have a lot of collectible value right now so you're looking for a buyer that is interested in a vintage Guzzi sport bike and chances are they are going to ride it as opposed to having it sit in a collection somewhere. Now within that very small group, you need to provide the details and a price that will attract buyers. When/if you find the right one, the price won't be an issue if the bike is in as good a shape as you describe. It will just take a while to find that person. If you have to sell it fast, then I think you will have to drop your price in order to attract bargain hunters who will probably flip it for what you wanted for it in the first place. good luck.

$4,500 is high in the North East. I am interested in Loops, early Tonti's and Sporty Tonti's and if this bike was for sale next door to me I wouldn't pay more than $3,800 and would try hard for $3,500. LM4's like the Spine frame LeMans just do not bring any money.  Again not that they aren't good bikes its just they are not desirable.

Spiney prices are holding up pretty well. Like all old Guzzis, they keep dropping until they hit a plateau, then start climbing again.
