Fuel Filter Swap
« on: September 20, 2015, 07:54:33 PM »
Got out early for b'fast with Cam & the gents, and beat it back home to start taking the Sport apart for some 12,000mi fun.

Replaced air & fuel filters, plugs, & check/adjust valves.  Gear box & CARC oil done earlier this week.

Fuel filter swapped for the Napa Gold.  Biggest niggles were:
* the fuel disconnect which eventually complied with my efforts.
*coming up with a way to stand the tank on its' nose without the flimsy leading edges taking all the weight.
stood it on a wash-bucket to get it near vertical.

Fuel filter was plump & squishy like a big fat tick-

Assembly ready to go back in-  thanks y'all for the tip on Oetiker clamps and Knipex pliers-

Thanks for coming out to breakfast.  Hope it helped you burn up some gas before the fuel filter surgery.  Looks like you had some quality garage time!

Thanks for the pic's, while I'm going to be chasing my oil leak, when I find it I might as well change my filter out too since I'll have the not so quick release apart, how did you set it up on end to work on it plus what size clamps did you use?

I hung mine from a ceiling hook through the back hold down hole, with a piece of line.  Had to have a bit of help holding it steady when re-assembling, but was at perfect working height.

Glad to hear you got the filter rep[laced on your terms! (Much better than a failure away from home, right?

Anyway, that picture looks the same as when I changed out the one on the Norge I had. I was glad to discover my '09 Stelvio actually came with an all metal one.  One of these days, I'll need to determine what is in the tank of the 1400.

I pointed it nose-down and rested it atop a car wash bucket covered with a towel.  The bucket was narrow enough to keep the tank-tips off the ground.  I then propped the whole thing against the wall & tilted back such that it was not quite 100% upright.  That suspending it by the tank bolt hole is a champion suggestion.

I bought the pliers and a clamp kit off Amazon for cheap enough.  The clamp size was  7/16th / 11.3mm as shown here.  They worked perfectly.

Hint- I had one clamp that wouldn't slip over the bulge and into position after the fuel line was pressed onto the new filter.  So I placed the clamp over the nipple on the new filter 1st - then slipped the fuel line over the nipple & down into position, and finally moved the clamp up 1/4" into position between the filter body and bulge.  That baby's tighter than a piccolo snare!

Great info, thanks for the heads up guys, do you have to replace the gasket on the fuel tank?

The gasket is a thick rubber deal that fits into the recess of the piece that mounts the assembly. Just be careful reinstalling it. Make sure it all gets tucked in so it does not get smashed or cut off by the plate. (It will make sense when you see it.)
