Fork oil quantity
« on: September 24, 2015, 09:50:04 PM »
I'm getting ready to install FAC dampers in the forks of my 89 Lemans. Can someone tell me the proper quantity of fluid that goes into each leg.

Many Thanks

Just to confirm it is a V with Bitubos than the manual states 70cc of ATF.
It is widely known that thesis too much and your forks will turn to pillars of wood within 20 miles.
50cc is the accepted norm and don't use oil as it does make a difference.
Check out this thread for some good alternatives for seals and a photographic pull down of the forks

Also Mobile 1 synthetic ATF is very close to 10 weight fork oil. I've been using it with good success for several years in my V50, 850T, T3 and 2 DR650's. Cheaper than fork oil and the biggest reason it is readily available at any auto parts store.

This again raises a question I have had when changing fork oil on many different models of bikes in the past.  What is the tolerance, generally speaking, on fork oil quantity.  Do some forks, say Olins, require a more exact measurement than the UJM standard, sport, and dirt bikes I have become accustomed to?  I have always tried to be as exact as possible (with the measuring container at hand) but some of my buddies have "just got it close and dumped it in" with no known adverse effect.

Disclosure, I do suffer from CDO.  That's also known as OCD (but in the proper alphabetical order).

Thanks for the replies.  Yes it is a 5 with the Bitubo forks.  I will use 50cc in each leg
