Tonti steering head nut
« on: September 26, 2015, 05:09:07 PM »
I want to tighten the steering head nut on my SPII. Is the tensioning nut on the stem  32mm? Also, I note that the nut on seems to be split; is this normal or am I looking at having to replace it?
Thanks!

great, thanks! So now I know it is intended to be split. Anyone know if it is 36mm? I am having difficulty measuring it on the bike, and I need to order a wrench to fit it. I know MC Cycle and others have the correct wrench on their respective websites, but they do not indicate the size.
Thanks!

32MM Spanner.
Someone suggested (can't remember where) popping down to to a bicycle store. They were used to tighten down the stem nut. Some of the cheaper bikes still use them.
I think I found mine in the cheap tools throw out bin.

Sorry, not 32 mm. I was thinking of the top nut.
36mm as measured on the verniers. Not a bicycle size.

Right, 32mm for the top one for sure. It was the larger one I was wondering about; 36mm. Thanks for the confirmation!

You can also tighten that nut by using a screwdriver and tapping it with a hammer at the split if you need to make fine adjustments to it. This way you won't need to remove the tank and you won't need an ultra thin 36mm wrench. All you would do is loosen the top nut (32mm) and the pinch bolt, tap the spilt nut around (sometimes half to 1 full turn is all that is needed), then tighten top nut again and finally the pinch bolt in the end.
