Norge oil leak
« on: October 02, 2015, 02:50:01 PM »
Finally found some time to take the Norge out for it's first real trip, went from so cal up to Yosemite, criss crossed the Sierra's and on up to Lake Tahoe then back south to Death Valley.  The Norge ran wonderfully and it really likes the open road, however nearing the end of my trip I found oil running along the right side of the lower fairing.  I just now checked it out and found it appeared to be coming from the oil cooler hose that connects to the engine block. The banjo bolt was barely finger tight!  I snugged it up and hope this fixes it but does anyone know if there is a seal in there that might need replacing?  Or are there only crush washers?  I checked the schematic and really couldn't find anything.
Any help?
Thanks, Kris

Part of a pre-flight before a trip, a walk around to check stuff on any bike. On liquid cooled bikes you should check hoses for the coolant, same thing. Minor maintenance thing. Check the oil filter and drain plugs too, cause anything can come loose on a motorcycle.

Should just be crush washers. Check brake hoses too.

If it is visable and you can touch it, touch it. Takes about 2 minutes. I check at refuels too, at least a quick look see and wiggle.

Went some.long distance trips, quite a few dayers  and nothing like that.

I can't recall whether your Norge is a 2v or 8v. The parts diagram for the older bike shows a gasket on the engine block side of the connection, but not on the hose side of the connector. Given MG's linguistic flexibility, I'd bet that 'gasket' is a crush washer.

You used the term 'banjo bolt', so they may have changed the connection for the later bike design. If it is a banjo bolt, then the most likely (but not by any means certain) configuration is a thin crush washer on either side of the banjo head, but a single washer on the block side is also possible if the bolt itself has a smooth mating surface for the banjo head.

All the banjos use a dowty washer each side of the banjo head on the 8V's. Is this the feeds to the inside of the heads? If so they are the feeds for the cooling circuit, the lubricant feed for the top end goes up the studs.

On the right side (from seated position) just the washers, no seal. It was probably loose from setup and then just continued to loosen and things do.

Easy enough to check though, no more leaks, solved. Thing is, if it was tightened once and then loosened and then left as is and you tighten it, you might want to just put new crush washers on because methinks once a crush washer has been used, don't reuse it. They are cheap enough to replace.

Yes , it's the right side.  Easy to get to, only had to remove plastic so I could get her cleaned up.  I'll be ordering a couple of crush washers as I agree with you, especially something that could be disastrous if ignored!

Thanks for the replies!! :bike-037:
