If you are removing it , seems like you must remove the starter .

It's easier if you do. Only two bolts holding the starter on and two wires connected to it, so it only takes five minutes.

OK, pulled the starter, very easy.  Removed the switch, very easy.  Tested it for continuity, good... checked neutral swich bulb, good, checked the purple wire from console to terminal, good.  Still no nuetral light.  What am I missing?

If this is the switch with the blade that contacts something inside the transmission, make sure the blade is good (check continuity -- hook up the wire and touch the blade to ground -- light comes on?) and then make sure the blade is adjusted so's it makes the engagement.

If this isn't a blade type, nevermind.

You checked the bulb but is it getting 12 Volts?
Ground out the terminal on the gearbox, does the light come on?
If so the blade of the switch needs tweaking a little to contact the bump on the selector drum.

Voltmeter, Oil Pressure, Generator & Neutral lights have a common supply from fuse 3
This also supplies the Stop light circuit.

I can send you the schematic from the manual if you need it.

Thanks Roy, I still have the copy you sent me earlier.   Just noted that I lose the city light everytime the forks are turned to the right.  Gremlins again.

City Light, do you mean the small lamp in the headlight?
Check if you lose the tail light as well in which case it's the wire from the ignition switch to fuse 4 a Violet wire, could be broken at the switch or under the insulation at a flex point.

Got the neutral light back...there is a 'bugaboo" in the instrument console wiring since I sitll lose the "city light" when turning the forks to the right.  Another day!

took sage advise from Kiwi Roy (along with pics and wiring diagrams) and installed relays on the headlights.  Wow, what a difference.  Voltage drop at the headlights dramatically reduced and the light is so much brighter.  Voltmeter stays out of red with lights on even while idling.

Like Chuck I am partially clueless about the electricals and it took me three days to accomplish the task.  Good thing I took Roy's other advice about installing a 30 A fuse because I blew it and still don't know how.

The "city lifght" willl just be an annoyance ...spaghetti monster
