Convert Gearbox Parts
« on: October 22, 2015, 01:44:02 AM »
The Convert I ride to work every day has soiled its crutch, no, wait, sorry, spelling mistake, oiled its clutch!
I changed all the transmission seals when I acquired the bike 6 years or so ago, but it appears I didnt get the gearbox-clutch seal quite right.
I have a solution; drag out my spare Vert box & hook it onto my spare 1000LM engine, then swap them out one weekend. But to do that I need to replace some small parts in the spare box which I "loaned" to someone years ago & were never replaced.
Can anyone point me in the direction of  a wrecker/breaker who might have gear selector parts for a Convert box, please?

Thanks in advance, Roy

There's a guy on ebay, lamontsanford, that seems to get a lot of 'vert stuff.  What exactly do you need?

Also, what do you use the clutch for?  How do you know it's oiled?

Why shift?

Plus, I have 3  convert transmissions I'm looking to sell. PM me.

Thanks Guys.
Ans1; what do I use the clutch for? Currently I dont because it encourages it to slip.
2, I know its oiled because, a,there is gear oil dripping out of the clutch housing &, b, when accelerate hard I can feel it slip. It is quite a different sensation to the torque converter doing its job.
3, why shift? I know there is a reluctance by some owners to shift gears on converts, but I disagree with that. I use low ratio around town & tight windy roads, 30-50MPH, & high above that. I change at about 30 & dont get much crunching. My ride to work is only 5 miles & I dont have charging problems, even with the lights on. I believe that is because the engine spins enough to charge. I also like to lift the clutch on startup per the book instructions, (ever seen that?)

Been watching ebay, can only find whole transmissions, will look again more carefully, thanks. Roy

if you drill a hole into the clutch housing (you can also tap it for banjo bolt banjo and drain hose) you can keep the oil level low and perhaps the slipping will stop.

You can shift, but you will eventually round off the dogs. YMMV.

you'll need the cam and timing cover swapped from the old motor too.

lamontsandord likes selling complete units.  My suggestion is to contact him to see if he's got anything he can't sell.

Otherwise you seem to know more about these than my dumb self, so I'll let you have at it.

Yea, thanks. Have them both. In fact I have almost everything it takes to make another Vert, except final drive & missing G/Box detail bits. I was given a set of parts by some one who had "converted" his to a G5.

Opened the box & identified the missing bits. Less than what I had remembered, its only the pawl & spring, which makes sense, they were removed from a box which had been locked in high.
From Dwg 6 of the Convert parts book, items 37, spring, P/N 94321064, & 38,pawl,P/N 18234750.
To add cred to those who insist that changing gear is detrimental, yes, the gear dogs in this box are well rounded. I will TIG weld some hard facing on them & regrind them. :embarassed:

If you're talking about the detent plunger and spring that lives in the gearbox back plate, you can make them easily enough if they can't be found.  Also, these are very easy to remove from the gearbox in situ.  You can swap them from the broken unit to the new one with minimal fuss.

The dogs can be flopped for a fresher bite on the gear selection and re-undercut with a flat file and some time.

I wasn't questioning the shifting.  I was questioning the use of the clutch while shifting.

Whilst talking about Convert. oddities, I used to have a `80 Convert. and don't remember having to pull the clutch lever to see the green light on the console come on to engage the starter motor.   What do I have to bypass to take this step out on my `77 Convert.?  Is there a micro switch or?....  :undecided:

There is/was a switch, in the clutch cable. It usually lives at the bottom end of the cable, along side the gearbox area. It was the first or second switch most people bypassed after misfires when riding in the rain! The other one was the sidestand switch. The clutch cable can be replaced with a T3,G5 one the same length, no switch.

I didnt realise that the green light on the console which appears to be a "neutral" light is connected to the cable switch! Duh, makes sense! :embarassed:
I binned the clutch cable on mine before I even attempted to start it.

After a couple of weeks fiddling around with other parts of this project, I'm back. The Square barrel LM engine is almost ready for assembly, I would like to soda blast the road film stain off which I couldnt remove with mag wheel cleaner. I have found a Convert cam which has been ground, reputedly to match a LM profile. We will see when I put the degree wheel on it. I have turned some thread out of the back of the crank to accommodate the torque converter. The next step is to machine weight off the flywheel. I need to work out how to attach pics.Do they have to loaded from a an external source?

Hey, thanks TW. I followed the link but I dont use off sites hosts for a couple of reasons, one, I had a trojan horse screw my emails using Dropbox which I did use. Two, I cant be bothered learning how to find and use another. I loaded photos direct from my computer a few years ago, if the system has changed & that cant be done any longer, I quit. No hard feelings, I will just get on with wrenching & riding. Thanks for the help & support until now. Ciao.Roy.
