Breva 1200 S- Immobilizer
« on: November 10, 2015, 01:52:12 PM »
I'm sure this subject has been beaten to death for some people. Here's my situation; just purchased 2008 Breva 1200 Sport at auction, I was pretty excited to ride this weekend but when I went to start the bike it asks me for a code and wont turn over.

The bike only came with one key, its all black (non-transponder of the original pair unless I'm mistaken).

From what I understand I have a few options to get the bike started, apart from blindly guessing the code (it's not 00000 or 36421)
My questions:

1. Is it possible to change the code with new transponder keys?
2. Is a new dash required, if so, does this require new keys?
3. is it possible to disable the immobilizer on the ECU? I have all the software and cables, if someone were to supply me an XDF file for this bike. I'd be happy to do some experimenting and report back here.

Thanks,

I've owned a 1200 Sport for over 5 years, and it was several years before I loaded a code via the MODE switch and button.  I recall that prior to loading a code (the much overused 36421) it would request that I enter an identification code.  I ignored the message, and the bike always started.  Ultimately I did load 36421, just to eliminate seeing the obnoxious message every time I started the bike.

I'm wondering if you're getting the 'enter code' message because the previous owner never entered a code, and if the no start condition is due to something as simple as a low battery?  The starters on these bikes won't groan and moan on a low battery ...... they just won't do anything, because the starter relay won't trigger and deliver any juice to the starter solenoid.  Many of us have installed what we call the 'startus interruptus' kit which eliminates the problem by bypassing lots of wiring and connections, and provides a better source of power to the starter relay.  Check battery voltage and battery condition first.

Of course I could be way off base, others please jump in here.

BTW ... I believe both the original keys are the passive transponder type.  Sorry I cannot address your specific questions (1,2 and3)

That's a good point, battery was low when the bike was delivered, had it on a tender for 10 hours. but it still doesn't seem to be in top shape. voltage shows in the 10.5-11.5 range. I do hear a relay clicking when I press the starter though.

Does the message say "Don't forget to insert your user code." Or is it just saying "Insert user code" with a line of dashes underneath? The two messages indicate two different things.

If the relay is clicking then chances are it is simply a dud battery though.

I'll be changing the battery as soon as I get home. that would make my life much easier.

If you intend to replace the OEM Yuasa with the identical battery, do make certain that the shop (or you) follow the instructions to the letter for loading the acid, the voltage output of the charger, and the length of time Yuasa recommends, prior to putting the battery into service.

I replaced the original battery after 3 years, and the replacement lasted less than 1 year.  It could have been a defective battery, but I'm inclined to believe it wasn't fully charged when I picked it up from the dealer,  The replacement of the replacement has been working fine now for two full seasons.

Your bike is probably subject to the usual Startus Interuptus bad wiring design also.
If it is, a new battery may not fix it.

Monitor the battery Voltage while you try to start.
Then monitor the Voltage at fuse B again while you try to start.
Check the battery connections and ground
Give the battery a charge then try it.

0 - The black factory key has a transponder chip - just not the pretty side panels. I use either one interchangeably.
1 - Not quite sure about the question, but the user code can be changed at any time if you have a key and the previous code, or have the dealer software.
2 - No dash required till you've done further troubleshooting of much more likely issues.
3 - I've never heard of any way to completely disable the immobilizer, though it may be possible with an ECU reflash (but might cause other issues depending on interactions in the firmware).

It's a 2008. So as noted, battery first, then starter wiring modification (including a check of the connections at the starter itself). If you still have issues after that, then something more rare and expensive may be at fault.

:1:  I didn't see if anyone mentioned that, if you enter the service code and go into diagnostics, you should be able to dig in and see an error code for a failed immobilizer. If I remember correctly (and I can't remember squat), the personal code is usually set at the first numbers of your VIN. Either that or simply 12345. If you do a search in the archives, you might find what most dealers set it at.

Having said that, the comments above are prudent.  I had to replace the immobilizer on my 1200S. The part is reasonably cheap- $50. However, getting at it is a PITA. You need to disassemble the entire front cluster to get up under the ignition. Once exposed, you'll find they used a "security" bolt to hold it it. The bolt needs to be slotted with a dremel tool so you can remove it  (my old thread should be in the archives).

Just means that it's not been done. The immobilizer isn't the issue.. (I hate those things) just a dead battery. After you get it running, put a code in there so you can get it going if it does go tits up.

Thanks for all the great info guys! I didn't even suspect the battery/starting circuit to be the issue, but with the warning and the relay clicking, it all makes a lot more sense. Unfortunately I'm away in Michigan on business, hoping these meetings finish early because I'm itching to work on this bike.

Swapped in the battery from my V7, started right up. Now to see if I can revive the original battery, startus interuptus mods as well.
