Author Topic: 2001 Jackal , hole in valve cover (Read 12966 times)

Hi Folks,

Happy to report Doug and I finally got a Moto Guzzi-- we just bought a Jackal with a salvage title. We didn't spend much and it doesn't look like the bike is hurt at all- it's been laid down on the right side and has mild rash on the grip, driving light, and saddlebag; the footpeg bracket is slightly bent, and there's a small shallow dent in the tank, rider's knee, we wonder? But there's a good amount of rash on the valve cover and it's left a very small hole in one spot. We thought we'd try to mend it while we keep an eye out for a replacement. Would you all use JB Weld? Epoxy Putty? Something else? Any suggestions greatly appreciated, and thanks in advance for your patience with our questions.

JB Weld is a 2 part epoxy . I've used it to temporarily seal a similar hole in an airhead tappet cover . Just get the effected area really clean and allow for sufficient drying time .

Did this to a friends Goldwing. On the inside of the valve cover we took sandpaper to rough up the metal. Cut a piece of beer can, which we sanded also. Then JB welded that to the cover. Years later he still hadn't put a new valve cover on.

Thank goodness for this thread. I had no idea what a Jackal Hole was or what I'd do if one suddenly appeared. For a while I thought it might be a confused Jacksons Hole or even an off track ah-hole but due to this forum I know what to look out for.

If you have time to buy salvage bikes like this it might be worth enrolling on a tig welding course if there's anything like that where you are (one night a week for a term?). You can probably get the tutor to help you with that valve cover make a real nice job in the workshop and get a real insight into what you might be able to repair in future. If you take to it try and pick up some secondhand welding gear....

If I were to make a temporary patch, my preference would be to put it on the outside, so if it fell off it wouldn't get into the engine. But I think I'd weld the hole closed. If you can't weld it yourself, it should be an inexpensive job at a shop if you clean it well before you take it there.

While JB might hold from the inside, what it if doesn't? Murphy has already visited the bike, why invite him back? Even from the outside, say it gets hit for whatever reason and it gets inside and your first awareness are strange sounds?

I, personally, wouldn't weld it for fear of warping it. <shrug> Valve covers are available, and not too much money.
But..
Smooth on Metalset A4 is a purpose designed aluminum filled epoxy that is perfect for an application like this. Good stuff, and cheap. (Guzzi content)

Clean inside and out with acetone. sand inside and out where the J.B will go. apply a small gob of J.B. to the inside
slightly larger bthan the hole. While that is still wet apply a larger gob to theboutside making sure the two gobs meet
in the hole. After it hardens, sand as needed to make less ugly.
Done. I will last until crashed on the same spot.

Thanks everybody!! Already had brand new JB Weld on hand, so pretty much did exactly as Sasquatch Jim suggested, curing at the moment. Looks lovely already, compared to that rash.

If any of you know of a decent set of used crashbars, please pass the word.

Any of you found a particular rattle can paint that's a fair match to the valve covers? Just the sanded JB Weld doesn't look too bad, but some touch-up would be nice. I googled and searched here but mostly found info about powder coat and black paint. And just to note, ordered a sump gasket from Harper's in the morning hours and got a shipping notice by early afternoon, extra good. Thanks again for the help.

We took our valve cover into Autozone last night and matched it up with a can of VHT High Temp Engine Enamel #SP995 Cast Aluminum; went on just about perfect color-wise, but it does have a bit of metallic to it. We're very happy with the way it turned out, and wanted to post up in case anybody else is looking for paint.

How about that custom rear fender? We have no idea what happened, but it's in a perfect V. Any of you recognize it? We'd love to know the history on this bike; it seems well cared for over all, and has a nice set of Piaa driving lights installed. We peeled a New York inspection sticker off the front fork. If it hasn't happened already you might want to replace the tail lights with superbright LED's or that will be your next project.

My 98 EV is still original, I think it's if the stop light jambs on that they melt.
However the Superbright LEDs would be an improvement, I use the 194 LEDs in my dash.

Yes we have a stable full right now: I have an '08 DR650 and a '15 Ducati Scrambler; Doug has a '99 KLR250 (see the milk crate), an '08 KLR685, a '10 Bonneville T100 Black, and a '14 CB500X. Along with the Jackal we picked up a week or so ago. We're 53 and I reckon we aim to have owned one of everything before it's all over. We started out on cheap Japenese bikes, then a long stretch on BMW airheads back in the day. This is our first go round with Ducati and Moto Guzzi, having a big time so far. We're looking to downsize though, so you all please pass the word on the KLR685 and the Bonneville. Thanks!

Reviving this thread a bit here as Sarah and Doug just contacted me. This is indeed my former bike. So happy to see it found a home following my accident. I wanted greatly to buy it back but the insurance company auctioned before I could.

Just some info, I bought the bike off the BMW marketplace board from a fellow's wife in Florida whose husband had passed on. He kept the bike in meticulous condition. I do think it is likely my personal favorite California of the 4 I previously owned. Congrats Sarah and Doug. If you ever decide to sell that thing, do contact me first
