Check and set the ignition advance - Guzzi v50
« on: November 24, 2015, 12:09:17 PM »
Hi, I've set the static timing on. V50 and am now wondering if I should bother spending the €59 on a timing wheel from Stein Dinse to check the advance with a strobe?

I'm assuming that if the bike runs okay and revs out its probably working okay? If the advance wasn't working then I guess it just wouldn't get to the red line?

So, should I bother?

There's a full advance mark on the flywheel..

Mmmmm, I've spotted two pairs of dots and lines, I assume one for static advance and TDc per cylinder.

I did see another line, is that it? Is there just 1 for full advance on cylinder number one (right sitting on bike)?

If that is it, do I just hook the strobe up to plug lead one, run the bike at high rpm and check that the mark  lines up with the centre mark on the inspection hole?

Apologies for the bombardment of questions...

I'm working from memory here, *always* an iffy thing..  but I'm pretty sure there is a TDC, static timing, and full advance mark. It's been years since I worked on a V50.. but yes, the timing light through the port hole will do it. You may have to brighten up the full advance mark with a piece of chalk or something..

Isn't that for the Mark II?

According to the cover of the factory manual it is for V35 and V50 (all models). I had a '79 and have an '80 and what I put up is appropriate to them both.

Chrisk, if your bike has points I have that in my manual also and can scan and put those instructions up.

Hi, all very confusing and it's a V50 iii with points by the way. In my manual below it shows the timing set using a timing wheel see below pics. I wondering what manual you are using ?

I've also had another look at the flywheel, and yes there is an extra mark, a slanted line (3rd pic). The first pic shows the static 10 degree mark (a DOT), the second is tdc (a LINE), obviously the DOT comes before the LINE going anti clockwise facing the rear wheel,  and there are two sets of these, one per cylinder.

10 degrees before tdc for static timing

TDC

? 11 or 12 teeth before tdc on number 1 rh cylinder

The 3rd pic could be the advance line - I counted the teeth and its 11 or 12 before the tdc mark, and using a previous posts logic that there are 90 teeth, therefore each one is 4 degrees, this would mean the mark is 44-48 degrees before tdc on number 1 (rh cylinder). The books says 35+/- 2 but it's close. Is this the mark that someone mentioned ?

And I guess in summary if it is I can time it using a strobe but if not then...?

Thanks

Ok, if you're not sure.. Google "timing disc image". Print it out, and glue it to an aluminum or some such plate. Mount it to the rotor bolt, find TDC, etc. Mark your flywheel, using this. Then, you can check timing with a strobe any time you want through the port hole. I documented this operation on the Lario rehab thread..

sure, that sounds like the last resort, but does anyone know what the extra mark is as its not referenced in the manual of have they timed a v50 iii?

I would not assume anything when it comes to flywheel marks.  There may also be a mark for the crank pin, for mounting, which lines up w/nothing.

If you have a timing light w/advance-retard dial on it   all you need is TDC

I have to time these bikes after someone else was in there and put the flywheel on wrong and make my own marks. I use a degree wheel and my light w/dial.

Late model V50III's came w/round & square punch marks, these were put on the V65's also.

Ok, get ya, degree wheel it is then. I don't have a variable timing light so I guess it's just a case of either

1 - mark 35 degrees btdc on the flywheel and check that the light fires and that the new mark lines up with the window centre at higher revs (ie full advance).

2 - put a marker wire where 35 degrees btdc is against the degree wheel and check that the light fires at that point.

Apologies for the step by step, never done it before!

And I'm glad you said later v50 III's have the two marks, square and round for v50/v65 as mine doesn't so it must be an early one. I wondered what the story was.

Thanks

Just photocopy a round protractor and stick it onto an old CD
Or even a 1/2 protractor for that matter. you only need 45°
