 Why are chickens better than dogs ? Hens lay eggs you can eat....You can eat a chicken....hens don't bark....chicken crap excellent fertilizer and less messy than stepping in dog crap...
 And hens come when you call them.....My wife and her trained birds...

You can't eat a chicken with a name, careful.  You didn't mention that fresh eggs are great trading material.  I used to get a lot of free scratch by giving surplus eggs to my feed store guy.  Also, while great at yard pest control, they will leave your yard pretty torn up and for some reason really like the back porch for a pooping platform.  I miss not having chickens but that's city living for ya.

The best way we ever found to keep horses out of the vegetable garden and canines, domestic and otherwise, from our bitches was banty foul and sometimes, one privileged goat.

Kept things in order - offered up eggs and meat, munched down lots of ground-bourne insects... Chickens were the dickens in our day.

I've had customers who had geese for pets and neither cats or dogs would come into their yard.  The dang things  didn't like me being there either and I would have to fend them off by hitting their neck to keep them away.

 Yes like dinosaurs..and just as nasty....I've been around dogs, cats, and even goats and their owners always talk about their love, the look in their eyes. Humans condition animals ans see what they want to see... And there's a fine line between loyalty and dependency.... I would never expect a chicken to take a bullet for me....but if it does, it goes in the oven...

Great looking dog (disclaimer, I'm a Lab person too).
But..... can she get your glasses for you and have them be clear and usable when you get them?   Or, do you spend the next 10 minutes washing them?
