Wookie , what Wookie ?
« on: December 21, 2015, 08:51:09 PM »
Kind of disappointed that we haven't had a new Star Wars movie review . Anyone watched this new
JJ Abrams incarnation , is it any good ? Worth paying to see ? Is Harrison Ford to old to be playing space cowboys ?

I've read mediocre to good reviews on it. We have grandchildren here in California. No doubt we'll see it.  I'll report back.

It's pretty good! A lot like the original Star Wars in its attitude and simplicity of plot. (That's also a drawback for novelty-lovers.)

One emotional highpoint of the movie involves Harrison Ford, so, no, he's not too old for what he's asked to do in the movie.

What Wookie? The same one as in the original: actor Peter Mayhew, playing Chewbacca.

My nephew is a newly-hired animator for Industrial Light and Magic, and has his name on the screen in the final credits, so I felt obliged to go see it right away.

Maybe my strongest praise would be that they didn't screw it up! At all.

Thanks Chuckie , really hoping the new movies are more in the spirit of the first ones , before Lucas decided to "improve" them .

Congratulations to your nephew  :thumb: Peter Mayhew can't be a spring chicken , kinda cool that they managed to pair him and Ford again . Also good to hear the new movie is more in the spirit of the originals , that second batch was almost unbearable .

Sorta a remake of the first movie without the plot twists.

Solo looks a little old to be running around.  The new cast is OK.  Huffpost has cited 40 plot holes.  I saw several of them too.

It was OK.  I doubt if there will be a many fans that will see it more than once.  This one certainly sets up the next movie.

Took my kids Sunday.  It's a good job.  No surprises-you know where it's going before it gets there-but the ride is fun.

I knew JJ Abrams wouldn't screw it up. When I first heard about how he was handling the Trek reboot I thought oh hell that will be a bloody mess, but he pulled it off so well I figured he can deliver on anything he sets out to do. I heard that wouldn't let Lucas anywhere near the project.
As I said JJ is a master, and he cut a perfect balance between paying homage to the old characters while setting up their replacement with the new ones.

Sorry, but this fan loved it, holes and all.  I think it is the best of the bunch.  A good mix of campy sci fi, funny, and serious with some bad acting thrown in just for good measure.  Good plot twists although most people have guessed at one or two already (our group had bets on what would happen, my bet has not been determined yet).

Saw it on premier night and again the next day.  Seeing it again today.  And, it is worth it to see in 3D or IMAX.

I think it might be irritating not to see it in 3D. This is because it's shot with lots of foreground objects placed in the frame just to emphasize the 3D effect. (I hate this, and think it is destroying the aesthetics of cinematography, but who am I to say.) I found this really annoying in the first half-hour or so, but finally got used to it. I was at a 3D showing.

Is anyone else having flashbacks to View-Master disks when seeing 3D movies? I sure am. It looks just as weirdly unreal, to me.

It wasn't horrible in 2D (saw it in 3D first) but some scenes lacked kick.  I thought the 3D was nicely done instead of just being a gimmick.

Going tonight to the Disney Main Theater in Burbank.
Saw the first on in 1977 on acid, but haven't seen them all.

I saw it in 3D last night and I liked it although I don't think I'll pay to see it again. It has elements of the first and second movies and is shot in the same style. I waited in line to see the original in 1977. Han Solo is older, Princess Leia and Luke are older, but, aren't we all. It all works in the movie. It's a good addition to the series; I think better than the second set of 3 movies. It's not a blow you away special effects movie. Fans of the series will like it.
I'd much rather ask for forgiveness than ask for permission.

I wasn't fond of it. Pretty much the same story copy paste from A New Hope. At least there wasn't Jar Jar Binks in it.

Strangely, it also sounded like one, or else a clapped-out old truck, as I recall. Back in the Jar-Jar era, turbines at least sounded like turbines.

(But I did like the movie.)

There  is a great disturbance in the force concerning this thread.  One of the first movies I saw with my wife was the original.  Just a little info I went to the same high school as Mark Hamill, aka, Luke Skywalker.  He was class of 69 and I was 72.  I can't wait to see it
