can anyone tell me where I can get a sidestand for my 85 R80 that does not automatically retract?
there used to be one available; was it a "Brown" sidestand?

Call Boxerworks in GA.  They always have Briwn stands when available.

If your R80 has the same engine mounted bracket for the side stand spring as my '73 R75. You loosen the engine bolt's nut and rotate the spring mount slightly toward the front of the bike if I remember right. I think this tip was from Snowbums website.

It worked on my bike. It's not solidly down like a Brown, but it does not pop up on it's own. If you want it solidly down, go with the Brown.

I just purchased a browns sidestand with the mount specially modified by boxerworks to bolt on my 85 LeMans. Its a very solid, quality piece, but pricey, at about $275. Im sure the one for an airhead would be cheaper. Nathan Mende is the guy to talk to at boxerworks. He is a nice fellow.

Does it fit? The one I bought for a customer's SP didn't. Of course, according to them, I was "doing something wrong" or the "bike must be made different".  Sent it back and bought a factory mid-mount stand from Teo Lamers for $80 less.

For the $$, I expected more than the Boxerworks stand delivered, even if it did fit. Sloppy weld, bare steel mounting bracket. Should have been plated to match the stand leg.

Charlie, the brown stand I got, fit pretty good. I actually wish it would fold up further when not deployed, but its not bad . I painted that bracket black, so it kinda "disappears"  when mounted on the bike. The welds looked decent, not perfect, but adequate. Maybe you got one made on a "monday morning"? ..... its such a great improvement over the stock POS, that I am happy with it. I didnt feel comfortable dismounting the bike when on the stock stand, for fear it would flip up, when swinging my leg over, and it did fold a couple of times, where I almost dropped the bike, teeter tottering , trying to pivot on my bum leg,while getting off the bike.  After surviving that  awkward, little dance, luckily,with me and the new LeMans unscathed, I didnt feel too bad spending the $275.

I'd recommend you call Bob Van Farowe at 616-896-8569. He's in Michigan and fabricates the "Farley Sidestand". To me, its at least as stout as the Brown, looks somewhat similar, is plated, and it actually fits well. He'll also set you up with a new, longer, engine rear mounting bolt that allows the securing nuts to fully engage. With a Brown and using the original engine mounting bolt you end up with a nut that's only partially engaged for mounting because of the thickness of the mount near the engine mounting bolt.

He's one of those guys that says "send me the money if you like it ,otherwise send it back".

Costs less than a Brown too. Makes me wonder why I put up with the OEM sidestand for years

The spring bracket rotation idea just may work
It's a bit uncomfortable trying to do it lying on the garage floor with outside temp of 9

Again...This keeps it from just snapping up, but it is not a positive lock down like a Guzzi police style stand.

I tried this because I sat on the RH saddle bag and heard a "click". Then I was trying to slow the bike while it was falling over. In retrospect, it was funny, but not at the time

Thanks for the instructions
My 85 mono's bracket has a tab that prevents it from rotating
I'll have to remove it and bend the tab
Otherwise it looks similar

If I remember right, my bracket has a tab as well. At least on my old R75/5 all it took was a little bit of a turn and it worked. Try it like the instructions say, then if needed bend the tab a little.

Can you point me to the Teo Lamers stand?  I'd like to put one on my T3 and hope this might fit.
