Breva 750 tank capacity - 201 miles, should I go on?
« on: January 06, 2016, 02:16:20 AM »
Hello all,

My local garage was closed this morning so I was unable to fill up before riding to work. I've now done 201 miles on the 18l tank and would like to know if its likely to be able to manage another 15 miles?

It should be possible mathematically as my average economy is 60 imperial MPG (49.9 US MPG, 4.7 L/100KM) which gives a theoretical max range of 237 miles and I've been riding more economically than usual.

My fear is that the full 18 liters isn't accessible. I would love to know if anyone ever managed to get a full 18l into the tank, any advice much appreciated

Ok I decided to risk it, I made it to the garage near home and only managed to get 16.03 liters in it.

The little Breva did 216.9 miles on one tank at 61.44 mpg (51.55 US MPG, 4.6 L/100 KM). I'm a bit  disappointed with that mpg considering riding style but impressed that it'll do more than 200 miles on a tank.

The highest mpg that I ever achieved with my 2007 Breva 750 (now sold) was 52 mpg but my average was 48 mpg.  My present 750 (2010 V7 Classic) has achieved 50 mpg several times but also averages 48 mpg.  I check my mpg every time I fill the tank.
NO longer can ride

61 mpg sounds very good.  Really good.  Where you riding sedately?

In my experience on two small blocks, 48-52 USA MPG is the normal return.

Only one way to find out. Really doesn't matter what anyone says, you're the one stuck if it runs out, smiling if it doesn't.

Fairly sedately although I did do a couple of blasts upto 90 ish mph, my commute is about 16 miles between Market Harborough and Northampton (UK) along the A508 which is a winding and congested, rural single carriageway (I know at least one rider on here has ridden this road because he wrote an excellent review on his bike and mentioned it).

I can do most of the journey in 5th gear but lorries, tractors and few overtaking opportunities make it difficult to stay at 60mph.

I've just added a link to Fuelly in my signature panel to track my fill ups.

If you run out, do you have a plan or are you going to wing it?

I ride long distance on my `04 750 Breva and have never gotten 200 miles out of the gas tank, maybe 180 miles.  That's because the fuel pump/filter is in the tank and the real capacity of the fuel at 1 time is 4 US gal.  That's why I always carry 1 gal. extra in a plastic can as reserve.  I ride 65 mph most the time.     Usually get 50 mpg.

Carrying extra fuel is a good idea (especially on a bike without a fuel tap or gauge) but are you sure the tank isn't 18l? I filled up with 16.03l which is 4.23 US gallons?

What kind of man are you if you are unwilling to make the ultimate sacrifice and drive to the limit?  You were so close to answering the question all of us Breva 750 owners ponder...."how far can I go" Yet in your attempt to explore the unknown you have opened my eyes to new possibilities.  Where once I thought 180 miles was the end, there now appears to be new horizons i can explore.  To you Sir, I owe a debt of gratitude!

I ran out of gas on my Breva and that's how I know what it's real gas useable volume is.  When you see the insides of the gas tank it all makes sense.

Until then you try to convince yourself it's real fuel capacity is the same as gas tanks that don't have an inside fuel pump/filter in them like earlier Guzzi models.  What I am saying is there is still gas in the tank that you can't suck out of it because of the insides pickup design, so quit fighting this fact.  In a way this is probably a bonus as debris in your tank over time will not be sucked up into the fuel injectors since the gas in the bottom of the tank is where the debris will stay until the tank is opened up and completely cleaned out.

Have just come back after doing two 110 mile trips, there and back a total of 440 miles.

On the first I refilled after doing 232 miles, at which point it took 16.43 lits, or 3.614 imp gallons.  Works out at 64.2 mpg (imp) Probably had another 15 odd miles left in the tank.

2nd trip it did exactly the same. The miles for the trip are accurate. We were sitting at our legal  speed limit of 100kph. Todays effort was no less spirited, in fact as I was passing a line of Triffids I saw I was doing over 6000rpm ion top gear. The bike is running beautifully. I must add that it used to only do 61mpg, but economy and performance increased when Pete Roper ran his machine over it. :thumb:

Thank you for all the replies, this is truly an excellent forum.

I'm now wondering what the most economical cruising speed is I assume probably about 50 - 55mph.

In the US our gas tanks are supposed to be 4.7 gal. capacity.   When I run out of gas  the tank usually takes 4.0 US gal.

I use a 750 Breva for commuting here in Houston.  Last time I tested it, I rode 162 miles and it was time to start walking (I was out of gas).  I do tend to wring it out when running with the buffalo herd/commuter traffic.

I put a 130/90 rear tire on my Breva, which makes the gearing 250 rpm taller and the speedo more accurate.  It get's you a little further between fillups and the tire lasts longer too.

Probably. I can't remember the last time I cruised at those speeds, unless I was stuck behind a Triffid. I know one time when I was with a group of much larger and more powerful bikes we were cruising at 85+mph, and it did drop down to about 58mpg (imp). I have found that actually there is very little difference between puddling around town and cruising on the highway as far as economy goes. <shrug>
