1100 Sport at track day
« on: January 11, 2016, 12:51:51 AM »
Here is a video from the Central Districts track day at Manfeild on the 9th of January.
The old Guzzi went very well allowing for about 5000km old Bridgestone T30 tyres.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Yg3-5tYAVSo

I always enjoy my track time on this bike, sometimes it may take a couple of laps to catch a faster bike but it can be done with late braking and early power out of the corners.

nice video , it clearly prove that to go "fast" it does not need a fast bike... like most of those guys with space rockets motorcycle think.
( they open the gas on the straight line but they slow down gramma speed in the corners)

and thank you for not adding any stupid music , listening the guzzi engine is the best music ever....

btw what year is the 1100 sport ?

Yes, that was truly fantastic.  Next time, please take the ignition key off of the key ring, that fob blowing around was very distracting (not to mention obscuring the tacho) during the video.  I'm probably too old (not to mention fat and ugly) to do something like this, but at least I can live vicariously through your video.  Thanks!

A few random observations:

1.  Your gear whine is a lot louder than mine.
2.  I noticed that your throttle housing has a bit of play on the bar.  Mine does the same thing so I guess that's just a "feature" on the carb Sports.
3.  From watching the speedo, it seems that you didn't get above 4th gear?  I've never done a track day on my '96 but "rumor has it" that 4th is good for about 120 mph.
5.  For God's sake, man, change you brake fluid!  That stuff looks horrid!  (Get a new reservoir cap, too.)

Again, thanks muchly for the video!

Wow good response from you guys . Air temperature 23 degrees C. 1996 sport with The standard Dellortos fitted with Uni foam filters. Standard wrist exercise throttle. The Go Pro camera mounted on the tank seemed to pick up the gear noise and intake noise but not the exhaust. That key fob was annoying but I was using 7000 to 7500rpm. I promise to change the brake fluid and tidy up the cap. Top speed do reading was about 190kph. The Manfeild track has been described as three drag strips connected by corners so is not ideal for a lower powered bike but considering I turn 65 soon I am pleased with the bikes and my own performance. Just remember that this was only a medium speed class and there are two faster groups at these track days. I would not put my old Guzzi up against the Zx10rs, R1s Gsxr1000s on this track. When I encounter these fast bikes on the bumpy back roads I will give them a hurry up (while observing a certain level of safety ). Thanks for your interest.

That is sweet, love the familiar gear whine at the start and the sound when the engine is on the pipe... wow...!

You run some pretty impressive lean angles there Bud.

Ahh. the sounds of a Sport in  flight! I needed that. Well done & many thanks for posting. Gotta get back to Christchurch to get mine back on the road. Soon - the weather's looking favourable. The gear whine may be more than yours, Howard R, but it's a lot less than mine. The squeal of the floating discs at the beginning set it up for me. Knew I was on to a good thing right then.

Old bloke on his bike.

I have really enjoyed the response to this video but to be honest it is a bit flattering due to the fact that no faster bikes blasted past me as did happen a bit in the other track sessions.
Here is a picture of the source of the whining noise. all gears in very good condition but still noisy from the primary gears because the whine stays at engine speed.

The Go Pro camera mounted on the tank seemed to pick up the gear noise and intake noise but not the exhaust.

Good stuff.

Consider recording the sound with an external recorder. It will make a huge difference.

Check out this guy's videos: https://www.youtube.com/user/royaljordanian

He very occasionally talks about how he records video and sound. Co-incidentally, his video from yesterday is about using a gimbal. But the place to start is camera placement, and an external sound recorder and microphone, the latter with protection from the wind.

His second-last video (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FGiPGvgv7bs), also unusual for him in that it combines enduro from Morocco with London city clips, demonstrates that he doesn't have wind hit problems even at fairly high speeds. He accomplishes this by recording with a small Zoom recorder in the pocket of his jacket. The pocket isolates the mic on the recorder from the wind.

That camera/sound technical stuff aside, if you want to watch a master at filtering/lane splitting, he's pretty good at it.

That was fun, thanks for recording and posting that.  You had me hanging off my chair and cocking my head back and forth to maintain my horizon so I didn't fall in a heap on the floor.  The whine was intoxicating!  Thanks again!

Love your work, Mr Von Crump.

Felt like I was hanging onto the bars myself.  They looked rock solid.

Agree with Howard R - we need to see the instruments to complete the illusion.

Whine?  What whine?  That's music, that is.

Yes Pete, I went through the gearbox when I did the clutch a couple of years ago. I shimmed the selector drum and updated the double row bearings as per your online instructions and also replaced the output shaft as it had knocked a couple of splines off. I even enjoy maintaining this bike, the whole experience is involving and rewarding. I would have to say that having this bike in my life has helped me cope with the drudgery of everyday life. An example is that when I am bored I can do imaginary laps of Manfeild ha ha.
