Lane splitting
« on: January 12, 2016, 09:18:46 PM »
3 decades ago I used to ride in London, and lane spliting was fairly normal.

Check out this guys video, great work by the way, but man, either I'd forgotten how crazy it was, or it's got much crazier !

Thats pretty much daily reality in London... a few more idiots lots more speed bumps and cameras than 15 years ago when I first swapped pedals for a motor..

I try to use my eldo around town to discourage myself from the more extreme filtering stupidity/heroics, when I start attemptng stupid heroics on the eldo then I take a break!

Seems like a right friendly fella - not the "bad ass" I half expected.

Pleasant video tour beyond the mechanics of his lane splitting threading.

Watched it again, this time full screen on my computer and headphones (instead on watching it on my phone) - that was fun, captured all terrains and great selection of bikes he was using!

Thanks for posting!

Early in the video I saw that his handlebars were much mis aligned so he's not as good a rider as he seems.
Loved cooking the popcorn and catching it in the helmet.  Big full coverage helmets hold a lot of popcorn.
I didn't realize that London had so much open space or that Londoners kept camels as pets.  Must have been in a really big park.

Todd.

Definitely not bad ass.

He says that he does this as a hobby. Given where he lives, how he comes across, the value of the bikes that he owns (don't recall, but either seven or nine), where he travels (recently to Morocco with friends from Canada and Egypt), I think that he is well educated and well off. There's also footage from a trip to France that makes it pretty clear that he's at least early 50s.

I'm also not convinced that he's Jordanian. It isn't just a matter of his accent in English, which is wrong for at least native Jordanisns in the UK. It's that, having driven extensively in Jordan, I am struck by comments he made in a video made in Egypt which suggested that he was surprised at the rather free-form driving (to put it mildly) that is characteristic of parts, if not all, of the Miiddle East

Ah, I think this guy knows how to align a handlebar. In making your observation about his skill, or rather lack of it, did you take into account the inherent visual distortion a Go-Pro camera introduces?

Can you imagine someone lane splitting like that in the majority of US cities ? They'd flip out !

There are parts of the video where he's so close to the cars he has to lean the bike to one side to get around the wing mirrors and then reverse the motion to get past the next car on the opposite side.

I don't remember many free roaming camels in London myself....

Enjoyed the clips where he slows down to view some exotic car.
