JB weld high temp question
« on: January 13, 2016, 01:55:09 PM »
Hi gents
Once my T3 frame has been vapour blasted, I will send it off to the powder coating company for the finish.

Having cleaned up the frame of (now) unnecessary tabs, I have some saw blade marks and minor blemishes to fill.

I've bought some JB weld (high temperature) filler after reading that it is fine to use in this situation.

Has anyone any experience of using this stuff and how it copes with the powder coating process

I think I'm just after a bit of reassurance really please. :undecided:

Aren't there some low temp powders that melt at 350 degrees or so ? What is the Hi-temp JB Weld rated for ?

Dont know if this helps, but  my local powder coater has been able to fill over small depressions, pitting or cut marks when I have given him pieces as such to coat.

The powder coater I used told me that JB weld can be used to fill dents and such and can be powdercoated. This conversation came up when I was thinking about getting my tank powder coated and it had a dent to fill, but I ended up going with paint on those parts. I did get the frame powder coated, but I didn't fill in any of the scars before hand.

i think most powder coaters reccomend JB weld for repairs under powdercoat instead of bondo for exactly this reason...

I wanted to remove some JBW from a project and did a quick look on the 'net. The stuff is supposed to deteriorate around 600 deg as I recall. (search "how to remove JB weld")

You may want to read info from powder coating companies ....Some claim two part exposes will fail and to use special one part high temp filler that are available. When in doubt, ask the man who is going to do the work...If he says JB Weld is ok, get it in writing..

I've used JB weld to fill dents, divots and scrapes in 5-6 frames that were then powder coated with satisfactory results.

I have used QuickSteel to repair a few imperfections before powdercoating. As with anything, the quality of your prep work determines the quality of the finish - so take your time with the sanding. I haven't used JB Weld, but if it's more liquid than the QuickSteel (which is a putty) it might be easier.

Thanks for all the advice guys.

It seems that speaking to the PC company is the way to go.  I am optimistic as the blemishes are quite minor, as in saw marks and scratches rather than any serious dents for filling.

Thanks again
