Agostinis on the Cali Custom
« on: January 14, 2016, 08:57:08 AM »
While I had the Cali in the shop getting new tires I had these installed too:

Wasn't very interested in an aftermarket exhaust for the Cali until I saw these on another one.  Nice sound.  Haven't gotten around to pull the DB killers  to see how loud they are.  The guys at AF1 say the sound is 'Harley level' without the DB killers so I may just leave well enough alone.

The Agostinis on my V7 Special were "too quiet" with the db killers installed, and "too Harley" with them removed.

So, I shortened them.

When you remove the db killer, you will see that there is a length of tube.  I cut a little less than half of mine off and reinstalled.  Sound was just about where I wanted it, then.

Nice!

The DB killers are easy to remove and reinstall (if you have the right tool). Just for fun, you should remove the DB killers. I think you will find that your MG has its own sound and does not sound exactly like an HD. You might find the sound awesome and glorious and not obnoxious at all.

On my Norge, the Agostini silencer is actually quieter than stock with the DB killer in place.

Without the dB killers in my bike could be heard by my riding buddy when he was 6 car lengths AHEAD of me on the interstate. I put them back in. They are still louder than stock.

Mike, I had not thought of shortening the length of the dB killers. Hummmmmmmm  Thanks for the idea.

If you want a sound halfway between with and without the dB killers in, why not remove just one?

You'll use appreciably more fuel for less performance if you take them out.

Pete

Why? Less back pressure, less restriction?

How a Muffler Affects an Engine

The main purpose of installing a muffler on any vehicle is to reduce the noise created by the engine. Motorcycle manufacturers have to meet noise level regulations in order to make it legal to sell their products. Therefore, they add mufflers.

Mufflers have a series of baffles inside of them, which are intended to trap the sound waves that are generated in the engine. As the sound bounces back and forth, one series of sound waves becomes out of phase with the next, canceling it out. The muffler is "tuned" to the loudest sound that the engine creates, performing most efficiently to eliminate that particular frequency of sound.

In the process of eliminating excess sound, mufflers create backpressure. This reduces the engine’s performance by reducing airflow through the engine. The more backflow that exists, the less airflow there is and the less efficiently fuel is burned. Therefore, the vehicle’s performance is reduced.

On top of this, motorcycle manufacturers are faced with EPA (environmental protection administration) regulations limiting the maximum amount of exhaust pollutants that their bikes can produce. Thus, not only must they compromise ideal design in order to reduce sound volume, but they must also compromise ideal muffler design in order to reduce emissions.

Aftermarket exhaust system manufacturers are not faced with the same regulations as motorcycle manufacturers are. Actually, although the same regulations still exist, no authority checks to verify that aftermarket products meet those regulations. Mostly, this is because an exhaust pipe or muffler, by itself, does not create any sound or pollution.

I didn't think it was possible for a Cali 1400 to use MORE FUEL.  If that was the case I'd need to pull a tanker trailer behind the bike.

Sure but the MG has at least a decent fuel tank, no?

I think I was at something like 120 mile range on my Valkyrie - if I behaved.

per the onboard computer - 23 mpg.
(but that was at a sustained 85 mph into a 25mph headwind).

I'm getting 40 to 45 on a regular basis. 45 was on the interstate running 70 on 89 octane. If you're getting in the 20's, you have something wrong|

BTW: The mileage I noted above is GPS miles against fuel reading off the pump.

Since you've changed your silencers, I suggest you reset the autolearning parameters using Guzzidiag.

If you haven't got Guzzidiag, I understand pulling the 30A fuse for a couple of minutes achieves the same result.

Per my post, 85 into a headwind yielded low mileage. And, anyone who owns a Cali 1400 knows the mileage goes to Hell above 75 mph.

Because of the cam timing and the way the 8V pumps coupled with the closed loop trimming situation and target parameters.

Yet it still is sucking in the same amount of air, only the exhaust is opened up.

None of these problems with the addition of a CAI/ Corsa cat-back exhaust on mi auto..  :boozing:

There is no such thing as 'Suck'. Changing the behaviour of both intake and exhaust on the 8V heads with the cams they run and the narrow included valve angle has a serious effect on how much charge transition occurs. An increase in the uncombined oxygen in the exhaust is noted by the ECU which assumes a lean condition and pours in more fuel. Fuel that is wasted de to the transition and performance is diminished due to poor cylinder fill and VE.

So we are running superchargers.  :boozing:

See the sucking 'intake'.

When there is a hurricane forming in the Gulf of Mexico do the weather presenters say "There is a large tropical 'Suck' forming in the Gulf."

As the piston descends in the bore it creates a depression in the cylinder. Atmospheric pressure pushes the air into the cylinder. It isn't 'Sucked' anywhere.
