Gershwin Award Mr Willie Nelson!
« on: January 15, 2016, 09:10:56 PM »
it's about time..
I'll just say most of the performers butchered his songs.. almost fell asleep..
I need to add a little more Willie Nelson to my collection, what are his best CD's? I want some good guitar playing and voice, need not be his most famous hits.. maybe an MTV unplugged or something like that..

I just watched the show. Didn't think I would like it, but it was really cool.

I like the soundtrack for Honeysuckle Rose and Willie Nelson and Friends.

Willie is one of a kind. Writer, performer, golfer, stoner.
I liked the story of him writing "On the Road Again" on a napkin during a commercial flight.

Redheaded Stranger is a great concept record.

And a you can't go wrong with a greatest hits.  Every Willie show I've ever seen started with Whisky River which isn't on The Very Best of Willie....

I was very fortunate to become friends with or acquaintance of Willie when I lived in Texas during the boom of the Texas Music Scene, along with Jerry Jeff Walker, Waylon Jennings, Michael Martin Murphy, Doug Kershaw, Alvin Crow and a bunch of others.  Heady times and more than a bit of alcohol and a bunch of guitar playing involved.  One of the nicest people you could ever want to hang out with.

Always liked "Willie and Family Live". Covers most of his bases in one concert. Itunes has it, you can check some cuts out.

A couple of years ago he played in a small setting in Wichita. His son also played with him and was impressive. At the end of the show Willie jumped off the stage into the crowd interacting. He does seem to really enjoy what he does and life in general.

We went to see him last February when he played at Cherokee.  Just a great night of real music with Little Sister playing the piano, his son Lukas playing the guitar, Willie playing what's left of his guitar, and daughter Amy joining in for a couple at the end.  The great part was the band kept playing while Willie signed stuff for about 20 mins at the end.

Oh and if you want something a little different check out Folk Uke.  It's the "alternative" folk music with Amy and Arlo Guthrie's daughter Cathy (Irion).

Just dusted off "Always on my Mind." vinyl from early 1980s.  Got 'er playing now.   Love the crispness of Willie's voice.  I'm not a big C&W fan, but Willie is so much more than that!  I'm certain there a 'Stardust' album around here, too.

I really enjoyed the PBS presentation. I got a perverse thrill seeing that wonderful old hippy amongst all those squares...
