Suggestions Requested -- For After John Day
« on: January 21, 2016, 02:34:55 PM »
My riding plan for this year includes a trip to The National in John Day, OR (6/23-25) and then to hang around and attend both the WA (7/8-10) and ID (7/15-17) rallies.  The organizers have done a really good job of scheduling the events so a person can make all three on four, consecutive calendar weekends.

So, my question is -- what do I do during the twelve days or so between the rallies in OR and WA.  My initial thoughts are to stay pretty much in OR and the lower section of WA, staying two/three nights in each of three/four attractive areas.  I'll be tent camping (Santa brought me a new tent) and carrying my normal  cooking/eating equipment.  I'll need to be careful in planning to get well planted (have a reservation) for the July 4 weekend (maybe a KOA or OR State Park).

With that as background, now my request -- what attractions or areas should I consider as I continue my planning?  Good places to ride, good areas to camp, interesting sites to see, good places to eat, etc.

Thanks in advance and ride safe.

Excerpt from journal:
Decided to see Crater Lake. Spectacular! Snow 10 ft dp on both sides of the road was memorable.  “I love this shit.” (Roper)   Continued to Bend, Or. Went down town to mingle with the natives. Got a suite ($$) but you only live once. Hit a couple of the 9 brewpubs in Bend. Still waking up at 3:30.. grrr. At least I was packed and ready to go in plenty of time.

Yes, the Crater Lake area is definitely one to see and ride through.  I was sort of looking at staying in the Bend/Redmond/Prineville area for the extended weekend of July 4th and riding down from there.

Thanks for the info and stay warm.

Obvious,

come up to CANADA, our dollar is in a nose dive trading at below 70 cents to the US dollar and gas is now dirt cheap.

You will be saving at least 33% in Canada on what you are paying in the USA. Southern British Columbia in the Kootneys and Okenogan lake valleys is some of the best motorcycle riding in North America.

A passport is required to cross the border but you will find a hassle free experience once you get past customs, remember no fire arms allowed on your person.

A bunch of Canadians are heading down for the rally, we would be glad to share with you the best riding roads north of the border.

Google the Nakusp to New Denver road, any of the roads around Nelson British Columbia, the ferry to Balfour etc...

On your way to Crater Lake, spend a night at Summer Lake Hot Springs. Then go to Crater Lake via Lakeview and OR Hwy 140. After Crater Lake, make your way to the Oregon coast. ANY highway between I-5 and US101 is a great ride. No wrong choices there.
Find any OR/WA folks at the rally for more info.

Now there's a thought.  I've got the passport and don't carry a fire arm on my person (whatever that means) and my wife and I have always met nice people and had good times while north of the border.  It looks like some research is needed.  Thanks for the input.

I would recommend heading out onto the Olympic Peninsula. Much out there. Tillamook Air Museum is one. Cape Flattery is the North Western most point of the Continental US. There is a walking trail through the rain forest to the corner of the US. Pretty cool and well worth while. Mount Rainier is out there as is Roslyn, where the show Northern Exposure was filmed. Rainier has some amazing things to see.

Get a list of the waterfalls and covered bridges for OR. Spend an extra day at John Day riding the routes they give you at the rally.
Crater Lake should be #1 on your list.
I've pre-registered. See you there.

Canada sounds wonderful. I nust get there on a motorcycle at some point.

From my perspective, every motorcyclist should run the Big Sur section of Pacific Coast Highway (Highway 1 from Monterey, CA to San Simeon, CA) at least once in their life. You can see Hearst Castle when you get to San Simeon. Then, going inland, a bunch of lovely roads and wineries towards Paso Robles. You could also do the Napa and Sonoma valley wine country. Lot's great things to see/do in CA between San Francisco and Oregon too.

You could make a nice multi-day loop that includes Tioga Pass through Yosemite National Park:

You should probably buy a US National Park pass - go "checkmark" as many as you can.

Scud,

Thanks for the suggestion.  My wife and I traveled much of the coast road last September from LA to Portland as part of trip to OR for a military reunion.  Lots of people out there.  Never did get used to that lane-splitting stuff.  We enjoyed some good wine and great seafood meals during that trip.  Had a lot of fun.

Good Suggestion Tex.  I assume we can stay an extra day or so (by paying) at the rally campsite.  That way I can see the NE corner of the State without relocating.  I haven't preregistered yet but need to get that done before the deadline.

Ride safe.

Good suggestions Pete,

My wife and I were at Mt St Helens in September, '14 while at our military reunion.  Quite a change since the eruption took place.  Also had a good view of Mt Rainier from a distance.

With all of this info, I can put together a nice loop tour of the highlights of OR and not really leave the State.  Although, BC of Canada also seems to have a lot to offer.

Decisions, decisions.  Thanks once again.

Don't forget the North Cascades Highway

Is that Hwy 20 from Sedro-Wooley to Winthrop and beyond?  If so, that's a good road both on a motorcycle and bicycle.  Yes, if I get up that far north, I'll definitely hit it for a few miles.  Thanks for the suggestion.

I'm also considering doing the John Day rally, will be a hell of a trek from Houston, but a fun one if I can swing the time.  One road I missed a couple of years ago while riding up to Glacier Nat'l Park was to take a left turn at Missoula and ride Lolo Pass (Hwy 12) all the way into Oregon via Walla Walla...that could be a FUN ride!  Maybe another one to consider for fun while waiting between rallies!

Google the Nakusp to New Denver road, any of the roads around Nelson British Columbia, the ferry to Balfour etc...

Nakusp area is beautiful. And there is a campground at the park in the middle of town.  Hwy 31A between New Denver and Kaslo was fun.

There were some other roads we wanted to explore but were closed because of the fires this past summer.  Hopefully, it will be nice this year.

You sure that's miles? I was planning on heading down there to the rally myself, from Grand Forks BC, and didn't think it was all that far.

Make sure you have raingear.  Head west to the coast.  You can hit the Evergreen air & aerospace museum.
http://evergreenmuseum.org/ in McMinnville, OR.  Home of the Spruce Goose.  After that go to Tillamook, like John Henry suggests.  Home of cheese https://www.tillamook.com/products/cheese.html and the Tillamook air museum.  http://www.tillamookair.com/  Good fun.

I'd do it too. I'd have to ride North to return my bike to Sandpoint.  Good camping areas.  Good rides going North.

Sandpoint is just 20 miles south of me!!!

We ride up US 95 into Canada all the time in the summer, and have done the loop pictured above. Also check out the http://www.selkirkloop.org/  Selkirk loop.

This summer I will be building a new house about 2000 feet from the Canadian border on the Idaho side, so I think more riding in BC will be in my future.

OK, I'm making some headway on this trip planning.  I concluded that a reserved accommodation was desirable for the 4th of July weekend, and that Central Oregon around Bend, Sisters, Prineville, Madras would be a good location.  So, I'm reserved into the Prineville Reservoir State Park for the four nights of 7/1 through 7/4.

That gives me almost a full week for a trip north to the border, and beyond if desired, and two or three days after the Holiday Weekend to get to Randle, WA.

Thanks for your suggestions.  This may happen yet.

I can believe it.  Randle is on the west side of the Cascade Mountain range.  That area probably gets a daily dose of moisture.

My reason for going to The Deep Forest Campout is to experience the salmon dinner.  I hear it's fantastic because of the way it is cooked.
