Ponderable: If dropped what's Griso's Legacy?
« on: January 25, 2016, 03:46:06 PM »
Winter is the time for wild speculation , wacky gesticulation  :whip2:, and pontification  :violent1:

Of course, to my knowledge no one has said anything solid about the Griso being dropped from the lineup and there seems to be some guessing as to whether the 1200 engine will return at all - separate thread, btw.

So if the Griso does not return, where will it fall in the Guzzi historical cannon?  Will it be remembered as one of the more prized Guzzis or will it be one of the less fondly recalled misfires from Mandello?  Or about the same as others?  If I get enough positive reinforcement here I may have to buy one as a collectible  :thumb:

Since I even got myself one, I think it will be remembered very fondly.
Original, compact, versatile.
The green Tenni SE is stunning.
The Griso will be missed sorely. I cry when I think it might be the last Guzzi of its kind - original and not a cruiser, not an adventure bike, not a good-looking standard bike like the V7 and V9.
For me it's in a class of its own, and I bet BMW saw that niche when they came up with the 9T.

One of the best looking 'standard' bikes ever made by nearly any MFG. Like the Ducati Monster, it stands the test of time. Unlike the Monster, it has remained nearly unchanged in the overall looks department for it's entire run. Changes to 8V, wire spokes, and the like are some minor tweaks, but overall it's the same Griso.

A person may not get it when you look at the numbers- heavy-ish, long-ish, short-ish range, etc
A person needs to ride it to get it- great suspension (set up correctly), great motor, great all around bike. It turns heads, it sounds great, it feels great.

A Griso brings out, to me, what motorcycles are all about. YMMV. Hate to see it go, if it does go. Love my red '07

I predict the Griso will be replaced, not dropped. It might not be in a lineup for a year or so but something perhaps a little more refined will show up.

The Norge? History after 2017.

Who knows what Guzzi is doing . From what I see though I think they are doing away with the CARC line and having only  a "Retro" line up.   I hope I'm wrong .
Where will the Griso stand? It's been around since 06 or 07 so a 9-10 year run with only minor changes is pretty damn good. The only other bike I can think of that comes to mind that has gone longer is the Royal Enfield Bullet and the KLR650.
A Griso will be remembered as one of the great Italian roadsters but obviously second to the V11 Sport  .

I'm sure this is completely off base and there are many reasons why my logic isn't correct, but I've always like the Griso's looks and muscular stance as it seemed to be a follow up or more modern version of the Centauro, although not quite so quirky.  It would be nice if there still is room for a naked muscle bike in the Guzzi line up going forward...

I'm going to foster sit a Griso for a while and see if it grows on me a bit...if so, I might bring it home to keep the Norge company in the garage for a while.

They'll be available in reasonable numbers, but prized like the V11 LeMans is.  The Tenni will be the Rosso/Nero of the bunch.  Nothing to compare to the Coppa.

Aside from the 'Bumblebee' Beemer, the Griso 8vSE in Tenni Green is the only bike I've owned over the past 32 years that inspired non-riders to walk up to me while I was gassing up to talk about the bike, and mention how much they were taken with the looks of the machine.  One older (than me) gentleman asked to take a picture.  Asked if he rode.  Answer 'no.'  'But I have a friend that does, and I want a pic to show him.'

IF I thought I could have cured the extremely harsh suspension at a 'reasonable' cost, the Griso would still have been here.  A most unusual machine ..... took the long sweepers like on rails.  And the 8v engine had it all in spades!

the end of Griso...

Griso remained awhile to make a selection of such articles as were valuable and portable; he had been very careful not to touch the monatti, nor be touched by them; but, in his thirst for gain, his prudence forsook him; taking the different articles of his master's dress from off the bed, he shook them, for the purpose of ascertaining if there was money in them.

He had, however, occasion to remember his want of caution the next day; whilst carousing in a tavern, he was seized with a shivering, his eyes grew dim, his strength failed, and he fell lifeless. Abandoned by his companions, he fell into the hands of the monatti, who, after having plundered him, threw him on a car, where he expired, before arriving at the lazaretto to which his master had been carried.

In 2007 i saw my first Griso a black 1100 , i stood there amazed at what i thought was the best looking stock motorcycle ever from any manufacturer , the lines of the bike the way it presented the engine and how everything flowed together .
It for me was near perfect it was a roadster , it had a tough look to it and a stance , i was smitten.
At the time funds were low and the new price was high , i had just spent most of my cash fixing up a Ducati so the Griso became a dream but i thought of it often over the next few years.
One day when i was out for a walk with my girlfriend, i saw a black 1100 it was parked next to a Cali  , i pointed it out to her and she loved it , she said thats a beautiful bike you should get one, but then again time was not on my side a mortgage was at hand and a down payment was needed.
A few more years went by and the Griso found me, i was cruising the adds just looking at anything really and a 07 Black 1100 came up for sale as i read the ad i noticed that the owner would consider a partial trade on a large cc dual sport , i had a DR 650 that i wasnt using , we did the deal and the Griso was mine .
The Griso was always in the cards it just took seven years to find me.

In regard to collectability; I would hold out for a late 2012 Tenni (roller model) if my concern was return on investment. I bought a '13 and am very happy with it, it is different than my V11 LM Tenni but I am enjoying it!

I still have a copy of the 2009 Guzzi brochure.  The white Griso is pictured in the literature, and is indeed stunning!  I recall hearing from one of our good Guzzi techs that they had experienced little or no Griso dash failures ..... it occurred with much greater frequency on the BNS12 bikes.  I have no stats to substantiate this.

I'm going to foster sit a Griso for a while and see if it grows on me a bit...if so, I might bring it home to keep the Norge company in the garage for a while.

A few things I did to my Griso to make it the bike I wanted-
Drop the forks in the trees to the bottom line. One of the manuals describe this as a 'race' setup or something. It made the bike track MUCH better.
Adjust the suspension PROPERLY- the stock settings are crap. Preload, comp damp, rebound damp set up correctly front and rear will transform the bike. Taking a test ride and backing out the compression dampers is required so you don't eat your balls...

I also had Knight Design make a set of lowering pegs and now they sell them as a product for Guzzi. Do KD a solid and buy from them if you need lowering pegs.

There are no Tenni models with rollers from the factory.  The changeover came 1/3 way into the 2012 Diavolo Nero livery.  Just for clarification.

What's the legacy of a bike that even after nine years on the market still has yet to be classified?  It's in a class of it's own, a gentleman's roadster, a timeless design that's both enjoyable to ride and even better to look at.

The Green SE is cool, but my money says the black/red 2015s, which were the last of the breed, will be the ones to have twenty years from now.  That is, if anyone alive and riding motorcycles is still into vintage iron.

Dan sold me the small fly screen from his Griso.  Probably after he installed the Givi fairing.  I packed it in my luggage and took it to Rider Hill in 2012.  We installed it in the parking lot, prior to me taking my new Griso 8vSE on a couple day trip, just to put some miles on it, before Guzzi Steve did the 600 miles service. That little screen actually worked!

This may be incorrect. I bought one of the last Tenni SE Griso's in late 2012. I sold it a few months ago. The new owner was worried about the flat tappet issue so he had a mechanic inspect the bike and reported that it was a roller tappet bike.
