What happened on this date in 1959 ? Dusty
I was a fan of Buddy Holly as only a teenager can be. I was devastated. Can still do most of his songs, though, complete with hiccups.
Buddy was the real king of R&R . Dusty
Dusty I am going to have to disagree with you here...I dearly love Buddy's music but there is only one King....he was there before and after and Buddy may never had had the chance without Presley...that said Elvis would not come along with out his predecessors...guit ar driven music from T-Bone Walker and before him Charlie Christian. Early Elvis at Sun Studios= untouchable
Elvis never wrote or arranged a song . Even John Lennon understood that Buddy was the king . Yeah, Charley Christian , T-bone , and Bo Didley were pioneers , but they faded fast , Buddy was just getting started . Dusty
I was doing my 10th birthday when Holly died. My big sisters and all their friends had their walls, even their ceilings plastered with hundreds of pictures of Elvis. Outside of a couple songs, most of those girls could give a rats azz about Buddy Holly. Yes, he was influential, but not even close to the king.
I remember all of those Monkees posters a GF had on her walls also , didn't make them the king of anything Buddy Holly has had more real long term influence on music than Elvis , who was kind of a media creation . Dusty
One of my "unheralded" books in the other thread has an interesting look at the tragedy.George is an interesting character with an insurance scam going as a tow truck driver in San Francisco. He gets a caddy to wreck and finds it was to be presented to "The Big Bopper" and just can't do it. Goes on a road trip to Texas and points north in a poorly planned tribute.Todd.
Granted, I wasn't there like some of you geezers but in the early days it was rockabilly not rock and roll. Carl Perkins recorded blue suede shoes at Sun Records before Elvis. John Lennon said there would be no Beatles without Carl Perkins. Not trying to steal Buddy's thunder, he was great but Carl was a huge influence in the early days of rockabilly.
Carl was certainly a pioneer , no argument there . My take is this . Elvis was the king of media , Buddy was the king of R&R . Elvis was photogenic in a way that Buddy never was , so all the teenage girls adored him . Buddy had to make it on raw talent , Elvis just had to smolder and swivel his hips . Dusty
Keep in mind that Buddy's "career" spanned 2-years. Only a couple of albums.Buddy was influenced and inspired by Elvis, when The King played a gig in Lubbock that Buddy attended. Had Buddy lived another 20-years, as Elvis did, he would've followed a similar path into pop. Buddy was extremely talented, and very motivated. Some of you guys are taking a lot away from the Elvis of '55-'58. He was knocking down doors all over the country. He could play several instruments and knew how to arrange a song. Though most of his later career was covering pop songs, and he never wrote any songs, he was a very talented entertainer.

Which in the grand scheme of things is much more important , unless you are poking fun at us ... Dusty
Not poking fun at all. Just saw it on MSN and thought I'd keep the "This Day in History" theme going.
I took this shot at the cemetery in Lubbock (the spelling is correct--he spelled it differently on the records)
