Help: 2003 California stopped, won't go
« on: February 06, 2016, 07:09:05 PM »
Hi, I'm in need of some help
I have a 2003 Cali EV
It stopped today, was in 1st gear slowly approaching stopped traffic. It went out like It have been turned off.
Will crank but not fire.
Can hear fuel pump when key turned on
All fuses checked and swapped some around to check
Relays click with power etc swapped positions to see if that helped, nope.
Oil pressure light does NOT light up when key turned on? But can short the sender and light comes on
Only the neutral light come son with key

Any hints or anyone had this before?

Does that not prevent the starter cranking? It cranks. Also would that prevent the oil pressure light working?

How about the fuel line coming loose in the tank? Open the cap, take a look while you turn the ignition on. See some swirling?

I'll looked, do you see movement? Pump acts normal though, whirrs for a second or two and stops, just like it would normally. And also there's the oil light..
Pulling the tank off is on the list to check that hose though. But it really seems electric to me

Your fuel line popped off the filter on the pump inside the tank.

Ok, that is on the list to check. Probably soon then!

So the oil pressure light is a fluke that it started acting like that at the exact same time?
The bike had been running maybe 5 mins and when I started it the oil light was as per normal

Have you pulled a spark plug, ground to fins and checked for spark?

Got the tank off. Was a lot of fuel in the exit line and ran out of the pump. Doesn't suggest an issue inside the tank.
I can see fuel in the line that runs down to the injectors, when cranking that level doesn't alter.
I have just found a tiny sewing needle feed into a wire in the back of one of the injectors.....

Also going back to the spark plugs, when I had one out I gave it a good crank and sniffed the plug hole, no sigh of gas.
The plugs look like they been running very lean to me

You will always have fuel in lines even w/o pressure.  I would plug the wire back up and see if the elbow  squirts. Get a catch bucket & don't smoke.
Kind of dangerous but you'll know for sure.

Sounds like a fuel line off the pump inside the tank.
The oil pressure switch is just a 'bonus' to add confusion.
Good judgement comes from experience.
And experience. That comes from poor judgement.

I've just cut the end off the hose and put the connector back on and am about to put the tank back on to see if that made a difference but I doubt that was it.

I called the previous owner, the needle was for setting the TPS, it wasn't an injector it was in, my mistake.
He's had the internal fuel pump pipe come off another of his bikes and he reckons that's easy to diagnose as the pump doesn't stop trying to prime. Which is what I thought would happen. My pump is priming normally.

I'm leaning towards the injectors not firing. There's fuel as far as the injectors. And plenty of fuel coming out of the pump.
Unfortunately I am not very good with electrics so testing injectors isn't something I know how to do.

Never seen both injectors at the same time stop, unless the line came off.

If you had  software you could run ea one separately.

Where do you get this software.... and what hardware does it need? A laptop?

Looking at the wiring Diagram, the pump and both injectors all get power on the same circuit. So can't be that.
Unless the ECU has died :/

My understanding is with an internal fuel pump like this there is no petcock

Will add to my must get list...

Just reading the manual, it lists "oil temperature sensor" as one of the parts of the EFI system. And the picture points to the sensor that when shorted activates the light on the dash.
Yet when you do that, it still wont start.

If you have fuel pressure you will smell gas on the plugs after you crank it. You will always have gas in the line from gravity feed.
If the pump does not run and prime and then shut off(after reaching 3 bar pressure) the line came off in the tank.

The fuel pump runs for a few seconds and stops, just like it would normally.

However seeing as the tank was off I thought might as well look as it's been suggested the plastic filters can fail so maybe it was restricting it? Filter is ok, it's been swapped for a metal one.

That assembly is a PRICK to remove when that hose has come off and is sticking out....

Yes, the fuel line was off. SO, lesson learned is even if the pump sounds normal, it can still be the fuel line.

Will get a new piece this week and replace.

Thanks fort the help guys, I appreciate it.
