Laura, what do you think about maybe a used California?  There is a guy on the forum that is thinkin' about selling one for $2000....

That being said, there are a lot of good bikes and a Wolf is probably fine have never seen one myself.

Early on in my motorcycle quest I strongly pondered used. But after a life time of used vehicles I have a fear. What has happened tp me far to many times is that the used vehicle is a great bunch of small and perhaps not so small problems on wheels to be rolled about. All too often I have to go into a place that I just was to repair a thing that was not obviously inop and was working well when I was there. It gets frustrating and costly as these nickles and dimes add up. I really want a thing with no miles on it, I get to break it in, and a warranty this time. This will be my only motor vehiccle, not a hobby. Downtime is not a good thing.

And, my quest has been a long one. I am happy with settling on the Wolf...unless in the flesh something tells me no. But

I think before you close on the Wolf, as someone has already suggested, take a look at the Suzuki TU250.  They didn't sell too well, and there may be some left overs at a really good price.  Whatever you do, you sound like someone who is hell bent on finding a bike that fits your financial and needs panorama.  Good luck, and let us know your final selection.  More importantly, keep us apprised on how your choice works out for you.  Your writing is concise and to the point.  I think we'd all enjoy updates!

Will do. there are dealers for all Japanese marques in Prescott along with the SYM / Moto Guzzi shop.

And yeah I am hell bent on the practical aspects. I will be candid, my total income will be $795 per month. Doesn't go far. And I want to do more than own the bike: I want to run a horrendous amount of gasoline through it getting inn some wandering about that I have not been able to do since about 1984. And My dentist has been telling me for years that I need some strange thing called a "Treatment Plan", sounds nasty! I don't want to orbit my bike; I want it to orbit me. Gotta be a smaller bike than dreams unconstrained by reality had me thinking. But I think I will be happy. Lotsa miles aboard a 150 sound okay to me,

One strange thing about me is that I am Aspergian. I operate in reverse. It seems to me after decades of observing people that most of them can learn to deal with whatever it is that they have fallen in love with. Me, I can fall in love with whatever fits organically my needs. Boy, am I hoping this will be good. I think so.

Ya kno...people have more than once enquired as to the comfort of some vehicle that I may own at the moment. I say that to me comfort is that I trust it to get me there and back with breaking neither itself nor my bank account. I think the same for performance. performance it that it runs. I think the Wolfie will accomplish that.

Thank you! It looks good to my sensibilities too. And I looove that neither I nor a dealer will have to get through a protective tupperware coating to adjust the valves. I like it! My sort of tech. And. . .

. . . my first bike, the one that taught me of motorcycling and made me fall in love with that activity was the Honda CB 100 that this is a direct descent of. I like that connexion. I may veto this yet, if when I get to meet one in person, but at them moment both mind and soul like this one.

I found SYMs all over Taiwan, often overloaded (as family transportation) and often going up Impossible-seeming grades. I was so impressed I wanted to export one back to the US. I'll be very interested in hearing how you like yours. Good luck making it happen!

Verde Valley, huh?  Just moved my mother back east from Clarkdale last week.  I visited the MG shop when it was a hot rod Guzzi shop-Encore Fabrication.  Great place, still have the T-shirt 
You have so many miles of great roads out there.
 As to used bikes-your point is well-taken.  I love used bikes and own four, but my fall-back bike is my '06 Buell when the older ones get crotchety.  I do like the fact I can buy used for little or less but I also enjoy wrenching.
Hopefully the 150 can make it up Mingus Mountain with little effort.

Yeah, old stuff. Personally, I would love to have an older bike, even as my only ride, but only if I had the cashola, the place to work, and the time to fully rebuild it. I mean that my old bikes were reliable, I see no reason that an oldie rebuilt to an every gasket every seal every bearing sort of status would not be good now. But that sort of thing always ends up busting all sorts of budgets including at least money and time. My money is limited, and honestly, I want to get riding, not wrenching, soon.

I think it will ascent Mingus okay. I base this on experience with a Honda NSX 250 Reflex scooter.  The scooter was not a powerhouse, but was usable on Mingus.

Scooter claimed crankshaft HP: 19.2 (-) belt loss (varies between 25 and 50% will take as 30% constant) = 13.44 remaining (-) 1 HP loss in final drive = 12.44 @ real wheel. Note that I do not assume the variator keeps engine at peak power (either torque or HP RPM because it is not a computer controlled system capable or multivariate analysis. Scooter wet weight 420 lb + 180 lb for me and gear and whatever = 600 lb / 12.44 lb = 48.23 lb / HP.

Wolf claimed engine HP (do not know if at crank or countershaft as this is an ntegrated engine. Will assume at crank) 15 - 1 in trans = 14 remaining (-) 1 in chain (guesstimate based on HP loss in superbike chain) = 13 @ rear wheel. Wolf wet weight = 266 lb + 180 per above = 446 ln / 13 = 34.31 lb / HP.

Numbers look good, and the Wolf will allow me to choose a gear to operate in.

Hoo Boy! Can I! I have been thinking of all the places I have not been to in decades or perhaps ever due to lack of confluence of a working vehicle and time. Oak Creek Canyon is but 18 miles north of me. And there is so much more here. I may be meshugge, but fully intend to cross state lines in search of adventure with the tiny thing. And I like its weight...for 10 - 20 mph trundles on decent dirt roads, of which Aridzona has many, I think it will do fine.
