Two separate incidents actually. North Western NSW ................... ..................
My Uncle Sandy was an Opal Miner at Lightning Ridge (where the best Opal comes from - no Cooper Pedi's shit in comparison), family lived at Collarenabri as the Ridge was very much a wild west type place back in the 50's/60's, shit, come to think of it when I was there in the early 70's it was still "normal" to hear gunfire in the middle of the night and no, they weren't hunting - at least not animals . Kids grew up working on Stations in the surrounding area - mix of Cattle, Sheep and Cropping.

Cousin Bill was out looking for stray sheep and wandering all over the place looking in nooks and crannies. Not wanting to tire the dogs
he had them on the chookie with him - all four of them, and doing about 35/40 mph. He lost his bearings a little and forgot where he was
- but the Kelpies were smarter than him, they knew just what was in front of them and bailed just as he came up to a big flood drainage ditch. He woke up a bit later, around 15 miles from the nearest cuppa with a broken leg among other things and two of the dogs licking his moosh. He reckoned he was worried about the other two cause he couldn't see 'em, but he needn't have - they'd headed back to the homestead for help and then guided that help back to him, so about a thirty mile run without blinking an eye. There's no training for that
involved - just pragmatic intelligence and stamina, those dogs knew the ditch was there when they bailed and they knew what to do to fix things up. Bill always did say those dogs were better than any man to have beside you.

The other was Bill's Brother Dave, he'd been driving a tractor - don't know what he was doing exactly, but he'd noticed something caught up under the tractor, stopped to jump down to clear it and must have bumped the gear stick or it caught on his unzipped jacket - whatever it went into extra, extra low . He was lying under the bugger when he realised it was moving and as it was already pinning that unzipped jacket he couldn't move, he just lay there, took a deep breath and let the back wheel run over him. Kelpie to the rescue again, but only about a 10 or 12 mile run that time. He was a bit second hand for a while - I remember visiting him in hospital and being amazed at the tires lug marks running diagonally across his chest and shoulder. A bit either way and he would have been cactus, even so he said he would have been wallaby ted's brother if he hadn't been on soft ground with a bit of give to it.

So I might be a bit biased where the Kelpies are concerned - even so it'd be a mistake to have one as a pet - they're a working dog born and bred, highly intelligent workaholics that'll go flat out all day and still be willing for more at the end. If you can't give them work to do they go crazy with boredom.

Come to think of it I did see one so tired out he made a mistake and felt ashamed of himself - but that's another story.

 It'll be alright Maurie , we're all in this together . Heck , here in Oklahoma most of our smartest residents are dogs , I have just come to accept that fact  Heck , if they ever develop opposable thumbs we are no longer going to be the dominant species . Not truly convinced we are now

Back on topic - I've always though you have to be tough living in the back of beyond be it the middle of Aus. Is there a flip side to this in that loads of people die in the outback as they weren't wise enough to take a Kelpie with them?

I've never been O.S. so can't compare - I think Aust is just
different and people who've only been here a while or who
are Tourists just aren't prepared and may not know.

I recently saw a doco. where some tourists in Far North
Queensland were fishing, a whole Family of 5 down to a
youngest of say 8-9 ankle deep in the water at a wier -
There was a Croc in the water watching them about 100
meters away. That's like a smogasborg to a Croc.

I've heard of Japanese on bike tours turning for home
once they hit the real outback too - they can't handle
the emptyness and isolation and get freaked out.

Everyone grows into their own land and environment
I guess.

The fact of the matter is that as long as Luap is willing to put in the 2 hrs a day it takes so that this board can continue , it will survive . Truthfully , no single member joining or leaving will change that . True , the younger V7 owners may have a bit different sensibility than some of the old timers , every generation changes some .
