i have a little gravel story id like to share , while on a trip to Alaska i encountered a fresh gravel road which means they had just laid down probably 6 inches of gravel across the road , as i approached this section of road on the bike i noticed that a vehicle had left tire tracks into the gravel in my lane , rather than fight the front wheel and make my own path i chose to ride in the track which was packed down ..as i went on i noticed that the gravel was thicker here and there so much so that i was committed to my path of travel , i tried to pop out of it once but the result was nearly a front end slide.
I continued on and to my chagrin the track went into the opposite lane , it looked as if the vehicle had to drive around something and for quite a ways i continued on the opposite side of the road.
Of course eventually coming the other way was a semi with a load and he was not moving over, the track i was on as i could see did swerve back to the right side , i did attempt to move from the track but again the front end would wash out and i would gain control as long as i was in the path, the best course of action was to speed up and follow the path to my side of the road as the semi was approaching rather quickly now , as he approached he was flashing his lights and on the horn but i was committed to the path, as they say timing is everything and the track took me to the other side with little time to spare.
i am sure the truck driver thought i was either crazy or suicidal .
sometimes loose gravel is not fun........
