When we Boomers are gone will these virtues go with us? Mis-spellings & practically no punctuation from executives & other mgrs with degrees who had the authority to tell me what to do occasionally drove me nuts.I tried to get corporate to address these & was told to "let go & move on. They're not important. If the point is obvious, don worry bout it!" So I did then didn't. 1) I thanked them for their efforts showing up every day & contributing to my retirement funds which provide tires, gas, riding gear, insurance, motels/camping fees, neat restaurant food in out of the way places. Then retired & forgot about it. When I see those same things elsewhere now I just shake my head & do something motorcycling.

Geez pokeyjoe, you almost had him then you left the apostrophe off " 'bout" and you spelled (spelt?) "offence" wrongly, I checked everything he wrote too, and I bet I missed something myself. BTW, before anyone heaps plague and pestilence on my head from a great height, my comments are "tongue in cheek"... Whew !!!

Oh, I totally agree. I *never* use a semi colon any more, forinstance.

I used to win spelling bees. Not any more. Just get it close and let auto correct get it.

I can't spell for carp. Not to mention teh, and every other word where you can use the finger on the opposite hand.

Offence is completely acceptable , as is tyres . The semi colon was largely an affectation to make one seem smarter than they truly are

Absolutely Dusty, when in grad school I was taught whenever writing a thesis or white paper; always to include a semicolon in the title...never an ampersand. lol....no really

Operational vocabularies are diminishing rapidly. Words that would label a concept with greater precision fail now because the audience does not know the hard chosen word at all and so the word labels nothing at all. Besides, I use an erratic number of Englishisms due to fat too much of my life spent watching BBC productions or listening to BBC World Service on SW and the fact that being autistic I am an artifice anyway and highly affected.

Oh bullshit.

As a career writer/author with a degree in English do I need to remind you all that:

1. Language is fluid and always evolving.

B. Poetic license gives authors the justification to depart from defined norms for desired purposes.

III. WRITING, has always been about revision. I would venture there's not a single, classic work of literary art that was not written, then rewritten, then revised again, usually by multiple eyes.

But simply put the proliferation, nay the exponential explosion of written media as forms of quick communication have changed all the rules.

It's not worth it to proof read texts, and barely so to proof forum posts, and only slightly more important to proof emails (directly relating to the purpose and recipients).

That doesn't mean it's a lost art or that the general public is less literate (hell, if anything the public being more exposed to written word SHOULD mean they are more literate).

It just means that expectations are rightfully changing and language is evolving with it.

And yes, at the end of the day, the entire purpose of grammar is to ensure the communication is understood. So not to be too Machiavellian (which I seem to remember is a bit of a misnomer anyway) but if U no Watt I mean, then CU L8tr and no worries, this post is no more than momentary tracks in the sands of time anyway... It's certainly not a published scholarly work, which is where I would expect the staunchest adherence to proper grammar anyway.

See, the number 8 has a "t" on the end as it is,so it becomes redundant in the expression as you posted it. Please don't tell me I'm nit picking because I realised it already.

As the holder of a degree in English, I'm wondering if our man should tip his hat to the country where English originated and spell "license" with two "c's" and not one, licence with an "s" is the verb and "c" is the noun. Hmmmmmm.

Seriously though, grammar is best learned by spending a few years studying Latin - from that point on, all the "rules" of grammar will make sense, especially the difference between a direct object and an indirect object, and knowing when to use I or me as the object of a preposition (or a proposition as the case may be!

)

Once you can grasp the notions of verb conjugations and noun declensions, one's mother tongue and additional languages become very easy to decipher and learn as you look for patterns, almost like assembling a Guzzi engine!

While we were studying Latin - we used to recite...Latin is a language, as dead as dead can be...first it killed Caesar and now it's killing me...but it was a LOT of fun at the same time!

To this day I'm a poor speller and still find myself grabbing the dictionary from time to time. When that fails, I type the misspelled word into google and wait for the correction. I must admit that auto correct drives me nuts as that red squiggly line throws off my train of thought. It's especially bad for proper nouns. I keep in contact with a good friend mostly via email and half the time I just let my poor spelling ride. The message is way more important than trying to be correct. Chances are this post has some run on sentences. I just like to let my thoughts flow. Writing is our chance to say what we mean without being distracted.

As in ......... o, s, t, mus, tis, nt, as in I, you, he/she/it, we, you, they? Man, did those nuns at Catholic High burn this into you! It's been 57 years ago, and I still recall pieces and parts of it.

True Kev, but some colloquialisms are just plain ugly; this is one of them. It's almost as annoying as the atrocious 'two times' one constantly hears on TV advertisements. Whatever happened to 'twice'? Ignorance and laziness shouldn't prevail.
