Humanoid Robots! Oh my! Yes, they really are here now.

Yikes! Humanoid robots are really here. Atlas, the next generation of Boston Dynamics 2 legged robots has no cables or internal combustion power sources.

Very Very Quiet too! Looks practical enough for some tasks.

He walks a hell of a lot better than I can.  If I were knocked down like that I could not get up that quickly or gracefully.
But personally I would rather have one of these.

While the atlas is kinda impressive in it's ability to get around and not fall over, I don't much see the use of them until they can wash my dishes. They may be able to get around, but they're still dumb as a bag of rocks when it comes to making decisions once they get somewhere.

The main failing of AI right now, in my mind, is it's inability to make use of context. Like asking siri "who is so-and-so" and then being able to ask it "what movies have they been in"

and "ooh baby, give me more of that" does not count.

Google is context-aware now..

A friend (artificial intelligence guy) went to Google several years ago. I noticed a difference in Google soon after.
As an aside, I bought Dorcia a robot vacuum. When it wakes up, it looks around, laser maps the area, and decides on a pattern to be more efficient rather than just bouncing off of things. If the batteries run low, it shuts off, finds the charger, recharges, goes back to where it was and continues. It's far from washing your dishes and dusting, but....

there was something scary about that.

I was expecting the robot to take that hockey stick and pound the guy into the ground.

If they'd work on that half-squatted walking stance it would look a lot more human.  It did look pretty human when it was walking in the snow and had to catch its balance several times.

That half squatted walk is very familiar, it is how I walk without my canes.  But then, the robot does it better than I can.
As for the fembots, I wonder if they ever get headaches.

That's scary, purely because of where its going to lead.
Surprised the US military hasn't put a rifle in its hands yet; but seriously, look into the future 50-100 years time and
see AI trying to take over the world.
If you find that hard to believe, look back 100 years and see how far we've come.

Having really expensive robots just for sex is a waste of the appliances' time. Those humanoid robots are very complicated expensive proto types.

Maybe with time and development, affordable humanoid robots could do actual useful household chores. That would be desirable for an aging population, I think.

Chores!

If it turns out that the robotized enterprize costs are less than using humans, guess what?

But the commericialization of space will rely on these units...

Mining asteroids and moons in high radition areas.

Your right, A.I. could be a problem eventually....

Oh oh!

Until they can catch a speeding bullet in their teeth and spit it out we got nothing to worry about.

That's the combustion chamber of the turbo shaft. It is supposed to be on fire. You just don't usually see it but the case and fairing fell off.

We inherited a Roomba that works pretty well.  If you're looking at automatic vacuum cleaners, you might check those too.  You won't save any time vacuuming at first, since you'll sit and watch the thing, but after a few uses you'll get tired of watching and go do something else.

Watched this NOVA program last night, pretty interesting.  They are very dumb and fall down a lot.  Last competition for 2 mil the robots were unsupported, so falls caused some damage.
