Menzies' suggestion of a leaking phase sensor sounds like a good guess for the leak. If it is it's an easy fix.

As for the dash it may just have what can best be described as a 'Clearable Brain Fart'. Sometimes the Digitek dashes develop a fault that will cause the tachometer needle to misbehave and sometimes it can be cured by discharging the capacitors that keep the memory in the dash. The way to do this is disconnect the battery and turn on the ignition and leave it in this condition for a while, (Overnight? Why not?) before turning it off and reconnecting the battery and then starting it normally. I have no idea of the actual *Mechanics* of what this achieves but it does sometimes seem to allow the stored error in the unit to be corrected and the dash will function normally again.

Some pics from when I repaired the phase sensor leak last year.  Also had leaky left valve cover gasket which was replaced same day.

Note: I had posted a note on WG about going in from the top, which I think would have required air box removal (?)  I mentioned this on WG, and immediately received a phone call from one of our fine Midwest dealers, who suggested it would be easier if I was to go in from the side by removing the left header pipe.  This gentleman indicated he would send me the appropriate parts in that day's mail to fix the sensor leak, and to reassemble the exhaust header.

SHIM STACK (AS I RECALL)

Could someone that knows comment on the shim stack under the sensor?  I initially thought it was one solid piece of aluminum, but as I recall, it was a stack made up of several very thin shims.  It appears I removed the breather hose mounting fixture for better access, too.

Shim stack is important, sets the pickup clearance for that engine.  Make sure you get all of them off the old part and get all of them back on the new part and you should be good to go.
